How did you (successful transfers) ask your professors for recs especially if you were applying to more than one school?
- I sent my professors very detailed emails with info on what I liked about their class and why I want to transfer etc. I don't think they'd mind if you were applying to more than one school. Both of my professors typed the letter and printed out as many as necessary. Almost none of the forms required filling stuff out other than name, address, etc. In other words, the letter itself could just be attached to the school's form.

How did you ensure a good rec?
- Good recs come from professors who have a good relationship with you and to develop that relationship, you should always attend class, be enthusiastic, do well, go to discussions and reviews.

Any other tips regarding recommendations?
- Ask for them a long time in advance. I asked right before winter break, which gave them almost 2-3 months to do them. you also want to make the process as easy for them as you can, so definitely give your professors pre-addressed, stamped, envelopes and detailed instructions on what you want them to do. I personally filled in as much info as I could, including the professor's section (school's address, dept, etc), so that all my professor had to do was write the rec, sign, and stick in envelope.

I agree with much that Jimmy has said. A word of advice I can give: Get recs from Professors not teaching assistants. In my situation, I barely knew the professor even though he had apparently known me (my t.a. had informed him of my performance on several occassions) and was able to have my t.a. write a portion of the rec and have the professor write the remaining portion. Most importantly, in my recs, both professors really illustrated that I was passionate about their classes and went far beyond what was required to do well in each class.

Seems like getting recs from profs whore are alumni of the schools(if they're top schools) you're applying to helps as well. Of course what they write about you is more important..but it helps...
