"Recommended" Units for High School?

On Collegeboard, it states that for Reed...

Recommended units: 23 total
English 4
Foreign Language 4
History 3
Math 4
Science 4
Science Lab 3
Social Studies 1

I decided to take a creative writing course instead of taking a fourth year of language and I am taking the class for Speech and Debate Team instead of taking another science. I've already taken Bio, AP Bio, and Chem and just finished Japanese 3.

Does it affect my application if I don't get all 23 units? Reed is a reach school, but I plan to apply ED.

I'm willing to give up my schedule. However, I've wanted to take creative writing since my freshman year and S&D Team is the activity that has made a difference in my life. I don't know what to do!

Darwinishungry, I can relate to your comment about debate. It saved my son's interest in school at a critical time. So you did the right thing. Although nobody on this board can say for sure, it seems to me (as a Reed alum) that your H.S. course schedule will be fine. If Reed is a "reach" you will be successful if you can show your interests in learning (and some of what you have learned and why), your interest in Reed, and evidence that you are willing to work hard and can benefit from their program. Any idea what major you might be interested in?

I'm not too sure what I want to major in, specifically. I want to do so much right now! I don't know if I can make the decision to commit myself to one area right now. I'm hoping that in college, my exposure to the professors and students will help me make my decision.

You've helped me so much here and in other threads. Thank you!
