Recruited Athlete...Chances?

I am a track & field athlete currently being recruited by Brown. Im just curious what my chances are being a recruited athlete, here are my stats:

SAT: 2010
GPA: Unweighted 3.65…(weighted would be 4.1, my HS doesnt weight though)

I’m pretty sure I’ll get in, as the school is spending a lot of money to fly me out there on a recruiting visit, and Ive been getting weekly phone calls from the track coach for the past month and a half or so. When I asked the coach about admissions he said “we get who we want.” Like I said, at this point I see no reason why I wouldnt get in after talking to the coach about it, but Im just curious what you guys think…

I always thought it was illegal by Ivy League/NCAA by-laws to pay to fly a student to the school

cool, what event(s) do you do?

Nope, not illegal, all Div 1 schools can give all expense paid recruiting visits, nothing for this visit is coming out of my pocket. I do the long jump, triple jump and the 400.

not sure about how big exactly a factor being a recruited athlete is, but I think you have a good shot.

you probably have a good shot, but be careful. one of my good friends was recruited by davidson to play field hockey. the coach said she would definitely get in, so she applied ED but got denied. needless to say, she was ****ed.

yeah, you have a very good shot if they offer you an official

i thought ivies don't offer stuff like that?

nope, they do, and they are pretty amazing things to go on. You are treated like VIPs and you get in ANYWHERE you want to go on Campus. They even pay for food and the plane ride out there.

get in today?

Track and field stats? :D

I was at Brown for the semester (by way of Tulane, not on the team at Brown, but on the team at Tulane) but the team didn't look too great to me(though Ikenna is a great triple jumper, 49'2" the first meet).
I need to find a school to transfer to, and I'd consider going back to Brown if they brought in some good recruits this year.

EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME AT DAVIDSON FOR TRACK! I've posted about it hundreds of times on here, but they paid for my official visit, coach said not to even fill out applications to other schools, and I got waitlisted by admissions, so I ended up at Tulane (which was probably for the better athletically. . .until the Hurricane).

E- I PMd you on Dyestat. Check your PMs. I think you should go to Indiana.

Nope... they actually do offer officials.. I had a couple officials.. The two ivies I was suppose to have officials at (for soccer) was Brown and Cornell... I went to Brown right after I went to Spain.. And then my grandmother was on and off a respirator.. So ended up skipping an official with Cornel... but i ended up driving my self.. No paid transportation for me...but the food was free.. but that was surprising

Don't want to de-rail the thread MoWC, but I spoke with Coach Craddock at UNC-Chapel Hill today and I'm giving them another shot. I didn't realize how good their journalism program was and if I could run for Carolina, that'd be the best possible option for me right now as that was one of my top choices out of high school.

Any other Ivy league athletes admitted yet for track? I know Penn is bringing in some good talent this coming year and I'm not sure any other school can compete with them athletically anymore.

yeah, Brown's Ivy Championship football and soccer teams are clearly no competition for Penn.

Even so, I'll be sure to keep track of Brown football next year wherever I am. Without Nick Hartigan, I'm not sure how capable they'll be of defending that title. Yale is already looking goooood on paper.
And really, do any Americans actually CARE about soccer? :D

im guessing your point with all those quotes was that by "athletically" you meant "in track and field". Next time please specify what you mean.

In response to the person who asked for my stats...these are all my PRs from my junior year in high school (11th grade):

Triple Jump PR: 47'8"
Long Jump PR: 21'10"
4x400 split: about :51

Browns track team isnt spectacular, but they brought in a new jumps coach recently who was a 96 olympian (58' triple jumper, 27' long jumper), so for my events the coaching is amazing.

Eliptica...what events do you do? I am also considering jumping at UNC, but they said they want to see how I do this year before they offer me any sort of scholarship, but they did indicate I could walk on to the team there. The other schools recruiting me include Univ of Washington, Washington State, Georgia Tech and Air Force, and hopefully I will end up at UW, UNC, or Brown.

Jesus! That's one hell of a triple jump, I'm pretty sure you could walk on to most teams with a 47+ jump as a junior in high school

I'm a 100/200/LJ/TJ guy (11.02 / 22.81 / 21'1" / 42'5") but I guess I was going to run the 200 at Tulane before they cut the program [my PR is from my junior year when I onnly ran 11.36 in the 100]. The coach there, Derek Mills, has the world record in the 4x400 and ran 43.8x so I was banking on him helping me out in the longer sprints.

Sadly, I haven't really run competitvely for a year and a half now, I tore my hamstring at the end of my indoor season last year after PRing in the long jump and only got to run the 100 and 4x100 twice during the spring season (at Division and All-States, still finished 7th on one leg :)).

Good luck, man, those are some good track schools (err, besides Brown ;))
