Recruited athlete...how long before we hear on appointment?

My son is a recruited athlete and his coach has put in for his appointment. His application had been completely finished for a few weeks prior to his official visit in early November. Does anyone know how long the admissions board usually takes before an appointment is sent out…especially considering the holiday breaks? (I know that there has been a lot of discussion on other threads about this topic; but I’m not sure that they applied to recruited athletes) Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Does he have a nomination? Even as a recruited athlete he needs a nomination. The Academy can't make an offer of appointment until nominations are in place.

He just completed his interviews this past week. The nominations have not been given out in our area yet (from what I've been told by the individual offices)...notifications made in December. The coach was happy that our son had already been granted the interviews; but said he could help with the nomination if needed. Would it all be part of the package?

The Academy can't force the MOC to give a nomination. However, the Academy can let the MOC know that they are interested and ask that the MOC give serious consideration to giving him a nomination. Typically a MOC will give careful consideration in such situations.

The MOC is not likely to present one nomination before the rest. They can provide a slate of up to 10 people for each opening. The MOC must get that slate turned in to the Academy by January 31st. Many turn them in earlier. I am not aware of a MOC turning nominations in one at a time. They typically submit their slate at the same time so if the MOC is not yet ready to submit the full slate you may have a wait on your hands. However, since you indicated the MOC implied notifications will be made in December then you probably are looking at waiting until then. It is unlikely that the Academy will give an appointment prior to the MOC nominations coming in because to do so would require that they use another nominating source (for instance the supe or VP) and they have a limited number of those so they won't use them unless they know he didn't get a nomination from your MOC. It can get pretty complicated and the waiting is difficult but at this point it is, unfortunately, a waiting game. Did he apply for all nomination that he is eligible (at least the rep, both senators and VP plus maybe presidential or ROTC)?

My son was a recruited athlete for 2011. He received an LOA in November, which basically said he had a spot as long as he met certain conditions (i.e., nomination, cleared by Dodmerb). He did his nomination interviews in November, but in our State they did not issue the nominations until late December/early January. Everything was completed by early January, but I don't think he received his actual appointment until sometime in March or April. Hope that helps. Just curious - what sport is your son being recruited for?

Is it usual to have to wait a couple months even though an L.O.A. and a nomination have been given and processed?

If you have an LOA and a Nomination you still may have to wait for your medical to clear. If you are waiting for some kind of medical waiver you won't get the appointment until a waiver is granted. LOA's typically are conditional on getting the nomination and completion of medical and any outstanding file issues. To my knowledge AFA usually only gives LOA's with nominations and medical pending but I understand that WP has given LOA's before the file is otherwise complete and would not be surprised if AFA did that as well for recruited athletes.

(havn't figured out the proper way to quote)

I am a recruited athlete for tennis for the class of 2012 and received an LOA in October before doing my CFA. Today (and I have yet to do my CFA) I got a call from my representative informing me that I have been given an appointment conditional on completing my file. So yes, USAFA gives LOA's for athletes even if the file is incomplete

Congrats! :)

very nice:

PS. quote like this: [ quote="something here"]stuff[/ quote]
Take out the extra spaces before quote and it looks like this:

Thanks to everyone for all of the information. My son plays lacrosse. He has also completed everything; including the medical. Since our state doesn't issue the nominations until mid-month December...I guess we will continue to wait. Looking forward to posting as part of the class of 2012!

What if I received a nomination and have an LOA contingent upon only the nomination? How long might I wait?

I'm in the same boat Candid8. Keep checking my online status each day waiting for it to change.
