Hello
I am an African American that is being recruited by UPENN for track and field.
I am scheduled for an official visit in the future. I was wondering if taking an official visit significantly raises your chances of being accepted. I have a 1950 SAT and 3.7 UW GPA.

PS. Will a one day suspension in 10th grade due to temporary id's and late to class, hinder my chances of acceptance?

What’s a temporary id? Were you temporarily in some kind of unconscious state?

Ok enough with the dumb jokes. If Penn is bringing you out for a visit, they must think your academics and athletic abilities might be a match. After the visit you can expect to have a conversation with one of the coaches about how you feel about them, and you can ask where you are on their list. If they are enthusiastic about wanting you to attend, you are in a position to ask for a likely letter. If one is issued, your are virtually guaranteed admission, barring any more temporary id incidents.

About the soph year disciplinary action: how do you think your GC will write about you? I think you must admit to the suspension on the application, but you should ask your GC to address it also, and hopefully he will have many positive things to say about what a fine young person you are today, in spite of a small lapse a couple of years ago…

Congrats on being invited for an official visit to Penn!

If the coach likes your times, events, academic stats, and your ability to get along with the team, an OV will certainly enhance his interest in you.

If you have fantastic track talent, I’d say your scores and GPA will be acceptable. Just remember the admissions department always has the last say. Good luck.

From our observations, you are exactly the sort of kid Penn likes to admit: a minority with decent grades and scores, who possesses a special talent, leadership skills, and/or strong athletic ability. Good luck!

If you have only interacted with their recruiter, make sure you meet and talk to the coach with whom you’d be working directly.

Have you submitted your grades, etc through admissions? The coach should be able to tell you if you’re admittable (I assume you have if you’ve been invited) Have you taken the SAT Subject Tests also?

But I agree with the others, if your counselor will handle the suspension well then I’m sure Penn will chalk it up to experience.

My daughter has stats very similar to yours and has also been given an official visit to UPenn. Her understanding from the coach is that she has been given a green light from admissions and would be in a position to receive a Likely Letter, from an admissions office standpoint.

My gpa is a little lower than yours, but I received a 32 on the act, and have received a green light from Yale, so my guess is you should be fine…although I have no idea how a suspension affects their decisions.

@Riverrunner- Our school has school ID’s and if you forget to bring one, you have to get a temp ID and the more you get, the more discipline is handed out. Alos, i do not have a strong relationship w/ my GC but she is very nice so i am sure she will write a good letter for me. I talked to the coaches during the unofficial visit and they said that they are very interested so i hope i get in. Thanks for your insight

@Wilberry- I sent my transcript and SAT to the coaches and they said i would be good.I am currently studying for my SAT subject tests and hope to get 700+ on both. Thank you very much and i hope i get in !

Good luck erolimes! It sounds good! I think I heard from Penn that if you can average 700, you are in good shape Great school, wish you the best. Just be good! I hear they party hard out there in Phila (my home town, as a matter of fact!)

Thank you very much. I will keep you posted wildberry. But yeah my cousin goes there and i visited for a weekend. The party scene was definitely BIG. :D
