Hey, can anyone post/email me a teacher/counselor letter of rec that they think is really really really good? I have a couple that I can choose from...but I don't really know which ones are better...b/c I don't know how a rec is supposed to look like. Please please give me an example; I promise to keep it confidenital.

Also I have a rec from my Principal & it has horrible grammar, sentence structure, and spelling. What do I do? Should I ask him to change it? My parents think I may come off as impertinent...

Aren't you supposed to waive your right to view your recs? Regardless, I don't think it matters how it looks, just send in the ones that best portray you as a great student/person. I wouldn't stress too much. As for the principal one, if it has such bad grammar and spelling, either he isn't too bright OR he didn't care enough to put in a decent amount of time. In either case, would you really want a rec from this person anyways? Good luck deciding.

If you're able to read your principal's recommendation, I suggest asking him to (tactfully, if somehow possible) to go through it and change it. Or you could ask yoru counselor to read through all the recommendations you were given then have her/him ask the principal if he could "freshen up" his rec.

But if you don't HAVE to have a recommendation from your principal for the college or any special scholarship you're applying to, then don't use it.

Our teachers just write "To whom it concerns" and goes on with their recommendation of you, then sign it (with date) on the school letterhead.

Thanks...for the common app it says the principal or the counselor. my principal's compared to the counselor's ... is loads better. he says that im a very good leader & that im very involved in the school (just w/ crappy grammar). but my counselor just lists the things ive done.

yeah, i did waive my rights; but for some reason, they always give me a xeroxed copy...

Hmmm...does seem like your principal know you a little better than your counselor. Make an appointment with your principal...how open is he to the fact that he isn't perfect and his relationship with students?
