Hi, I’m a high school junior living in Boston.
I will go to Africa this summer, and this is for 2yrs.
I go there primarily to fulfill my desire to conduct research
in Africa (I work in West Africa Research Association right now).
When I go to Africa, I’m thinking of re-doing my junior year, for 2 reasons.

My junior GPA at Boston was mediocre, so I wanna change that

The school has IB programme (which is 2 yr-programme), and I wanna
do that.

Do colleges see this “re-doing of my junior year” as a negative factor?

I dont think colleges will see it as a negative, atleast from my experience. I
ve moved 3 times during HS and due to schools starting at different times during the year( different country, different school systems) because of this, I couldnt do IB the first time, so I repeated junior year to do the diploma. I had my counselor explain this situation in my rec and I also wrote in my app that I repeated because I wanted to do full IB. So I think you should be okay but I would also check with your GC. However, don
t mention that you want to repeat to
boost
your GPA. I`d emphasize the fact that you want to do IB.

I would definitely suggest you do it -- and pursue the IB. My son will be attending a United World College, which is also an IB. He will repeat his junior year in order to do that -- and so do most of the kids who go to the United World Colleges.

It sounds like an amazing opportunity -- is your family moving to Africa? What kind of research do you do?

Best of Luck!
