Reed: Academic experience V.S. Social experience

Hey all.

As some of my previous threads here in the Reed College board mention, I have an intense interest in Reed College. I'm attracted to Reed's profound and astounding philosophy on education and its location.

However, as I've conducted more and more research, I've began to think about just how academically involved Reedies are. I know that Reed College, like most high quality LACs, is a very studious place. Reedies are frequently quite involved with their studies as the academic atmosphere is intense and demanding. At first, this sounded rather intimidating to me, but I began to "re-realize" why it is I liked Reed so much; Reed creates brilliance and intellectualism in its students. Of course, not after rigorous studies....

So, to the point of my question. Since Reed is so academically intense, do students Reed honestly get the chance to do things besides studying? For example, being near Portland is an excellent thing, but is it worth being near it if you won't even have the time to go there? Believe me, no matter where I go to college, I will want to study hard and enhance my knowledge, but I will also want some kind of social life. If I went to Reed, I would study very hard during the week, but then on a friday or saturday I would want to go out a little bit, etc.

So, do Reedies have a somewhat reasonable balance of play and work in their lives? Even though studies are intense at Reed, are Reedies still able to have a social life?

*not after should be not before...typo on my part there, sorry, lol

If you haven't read Reed's LJ, you should. :)

try this:

and this one:

you should find info on social life in both of those links. :) along with alot of other useful information.

My understanding (and my son's experience) is that Reedies are "work hard, play hard" types, for the most part. I second the other suggestion that you read the Reed LJ communities, because you can get a sense for the balance that goes on. One of the main reasons my son choose Reed over the other options that he found the other places to not have enough social side to their work/play balance, but Reed had plenty for him.
