After visiting the school, it seems as though a large part of students’ time at Reed is composed of academics/studying (hey, it’s Reed). Outside of that though, what do students do at Reed? Is there much of a community for gamers? Anime geeks? Music fans? Outdoors enthusiasts? Do many make it in to Portland (for food or just a night on the town)? My worry is that since Reed is such a small school, some of the sub-communities I belong to won’t be represented, or will be a minimal part of student life compared with studying and academic discussions/debates.
There are plenty of gamers, anime geeks, music fans, and outdoors enthusiasts at Reed. The number of people who actually spend a considerable portion of their time downtown is much smaller, but if you’re good at time management, it’s possible.
Do many find/make time to pursue these interests? My visit left me with the impression that, aside from special events hosted by various groups, life at Reed is very heavily focused on academic pursuits.
It’s easy if you have a car/a friend with a car. I, for one, have been able to immerse in the cultural experiences Portland offers during the evenings. Tomorrow, for instance, I am going to a french-speakers meet-up downtown.
We have all the types of people you are looking for. I do not get along with any of them, but I know that their communities are strong.
