@NMParent000079 looking at past threads, they do sometimes give travel vouchers
@ByakuSharennegan It seems like a bunch of people still don’t have decisions!
In the same boat FA wise. ??
then again, such is life with LACs

For those still waiting on an admissions decision, I would contact the admissions office.
@OMPursuit I can attest that when it comes time for you to pay tuition there is absolutely no delay or confusion on the part of Reed. They are johnny on the spot…
@autmunspast… wait… so you mean there is not an understanding on the part of the bursar that I may be mulling over what it truly means to pay tuition?
@carondelet No, I only meant that even though they are very slow to make to make their decision on how much money they will give you, when it comes time for you to pay them they want the money now.
my comment was meant as sarcasm… more plainly: Reed takes its time mulling over these decisions thus giving the impression they are in profound reflection over whether a kid is “reedie” material, a commentary in which I am kinda calling them philosophical (pretentious?) when it comes to the student, but practical when it comes to the purse (parent?)
Not sure Reed is any worse (in pretentiousness) than any other selective LAC. And from what I’ve seen, there’s definitely a specific vibe to admitted students, so admissions is doing something deliberate. I wouldn’t read too much into the final decisions, though. Whatever will be, will be.
Then again, I completely believe @autumnspast that the college is eagerly awaiting my tuition dollars. Oh, well.
whew… just saying every other school releases financial aid along with admissions. I agree with you in that admissions is doing something deliberate …how can a family decide whether or not to make the investment in a plane ticket to a school they cannot afford? Got accepted into another small LAC in the NW, but didn’t receive doable financial aid (sad, but grateful to know that I need to take them out of the running). Accepted into some LACs in other regions with very doable financial aid and have made one visit. The days in April are running short with senior exams and the like coming up. For some people the cost of 500plus plane ticket actually means something. Reed might be a perfect fit, but a visit would help cement that decision. Who can afford to visit without knowing if they can afford to pay?
The answer to this question lies in what, perhaps, admissions is doing deliberately.
‘whether a kid is “reedie” material‘
At this point every kid under consideration is Reed material. The problem is there’s a hard limit as to how many Reed can accept; they argue about whom they want the most right to the end.
Got my box today, but there was no FinAid info inside…
Son got his box today. No financial aid information, but he did receive a travel voucher to help offset the cost of visiting the campus.
got my fin aid info just now by email
That emoji says it all.
No app status yet. Emailed my admissions counselor to see what’s up
My daughter received her financial aid package via email yesterday morning, and a travel voucher in the welcome package. (Double check your package if your financial need is significant.) We’re very happy with it and I’m really hoping she loves it as much as she did the first time when we visit again on Monday.
it’s remotely doable, but not amazing. we’ll see after RAD. I still love Reed, but the state school just gave me some more money…
You might be able to negotiate a more lucrative financial aid package for Reed. Although my son received a pretty healthy financial aid package (just about everything paid for), due to both of his parents having a down year financially in 2017, I fear his financial aid package will be about half for sophomore year and basically nothing for junior and senior years. Weighing against that is a full-ride national merit scholarship for four years offered by our state’s flagship public university.
@NMParent000079 very relatable!
what bothers me is that on the Reed FAQ it says they will not match another institution’s FA package or merit scholarships
we do have some extenuating circumstances (older parents, recent inheritance,) but if I go to reed it will probably come out of my parents’ retirement, which is not great
they want me to think about it, and I’m still going to RAD, but a tough decision just got easier
We just opened our financial aid email this morning. Reed gave us a better package than the University of Washington, our state school. I noticed that the CSS Profile worked in our favor for all the highly selective private colleges to which our daughter was accepted. I wonder how much institutions factor in “older parent nearing retirement age” when creating packages.
They haven’t sent me a decision yet
We called FA today, and they were very nice. We’re going to send our new tax returns and submit an appeal. Fingers crossed. They also offered to talk with me on RAD, which was very kind!
If you’re unhappy with your package I recommend you call the FA office.
@ByakuSharennegan I know that @CoolChem is still waiting too. I haven’t heard anyone getting waitlisted yet, and they might not be done with acceptances yet. I’d send your Reed admissions counselor an email about it.
