Z you misunderstood what I was saying. You got in in one-I did meanthat the newbie Plebes should look to the NAPSters and Priors as role models and examples of how to get it done right. To be honest, I think NAPSters and Priors would the the LAST people to bilge a classmate.

My son's Plebe year roommies were both NAPSters and they were a tremendous help to him over the course of the year.

My son is hoping for a prior enlisted or NAPster as a room mate. I asked him why. He said they knew so much and he could learn so much. R-e-s-p-e-c-t!

I second that about NAPSters and priors: I had a prior Marine as one of my plebe summer roommates and this guy was legit, a great help to have during the summer. My roommate now is a prior sailor who was an instructor on nuclear prototype. He's also a great guy who knows a lot of little tricks to get things done. Your priors and NAPSters are great resources, especially during the summer.

About the whole "Permission to help a shipmate, sir?" thing...one word of caution: don't do this too, too often. I know of one kid who knew like all his rates before he came and wanted to "help a shipmate" every time someone got a rate wrong. He got flamed on because of this. Helping out and showing off are two completely different things, and it's important to realize them.

"flamed on" is being called out, lamblasted, etc....catching the heat (usually from an upperclassman) for some breech of something, or behavior outside what is expected....

showing off at the expense of another will only land you in a heap of trouble, not to mention it will cost you dearly in the "respect" category...not only from the upperclass, but from your own peers as well....

the example filterace posted just above is terrific... for if the mid really wanted to help out his/her peer, he/she would have made sure their fellow mid KNEW his/her rates BEFORE ever leaving the room in the first place.... so here, while the root of the fault lies with the person lacking the knowledge, the bulk of the heat will fall to the peer who let him/her sink in the first place! (a "bilge").....

this is not like a bunch of cockroaches climbing on top of each other to get to the top of the heap.... you quickly learn it is a matter of sinking or swimming as a team, which is only as stong as it's weakest link... each having accountability, and responsibility, for the other...

flaming, bilging...definately NOT a good thing!

For the record: You only request permission to help your classmate IF the SAME question was asked of a classmate IMMEDIATELY before you and he either didn't know or got it wrong. You don't just throw the phrase around. Also, you answer the upperclassman, NOT your classmate.

At least back in my day, if those conditions were met and you answered WITHOUT asking to help your classmate first, you got flamed. Don't know if that has changed any.

Navy2010 has a good handle on this subject. Are you sure you didn't go through plebe summer?

LOL!!! you would think!!!

nah...just kept eyes and ears open...and read everything the thorpedo brought into the house.... piles and piles of stuff.... from a kid who, on his first visit to the yard, said "no way no how"..... go figure.... and had lots and lots of knowledgable folks on this site helping me sort things out...

it just reminds me that the winds of fate blow in many, many directions!!!
