I took it as the insider at watergate.

According to the Random Press:

Despite the pornographic origin of the phrase, and the still current use of the phrase in a sexual sense, it is not considered vulgar when used in the 'secret informer' sense.

Another example of how the deluge of sex, obscene language and violence has numbed our sense of outrage and shame. What was shameful/offensive 25 years ago to the majority of people is no longer shameful/offensive to the majority of people.

Lookout now, I've gotten out my soapbox.

"Nasty" jokes/language have alway been part of our culture. Part of my concern is that they are losing their "nastiness" and are being treated as appropriate for mainstream conversation. My bigger concern is that as the previously nasty jokes/language/behavior become mainstream, a new lower level of jokes/language/behavior emerges for the gutters to fill this void within the "nasty" category.

Before you tag me a "prude", ask yourself if there are any jokes/language/behavior you feel are unfit for display to anyone of any age or gender. If there is, be careful, for it is only time before you, too, get tagged as a prude.

I guess I'm dating myself...I was thinking of the Watergate connection. Please remember, Midshipmen are wonderful kids but they aren't saints and you might be surprised the direction their humor goes. It's a good thing you never saw the USNA magazine "The Log" when it was still around!

I've really dated myself. I ONLY thought about Watergate.
Thanks for giving me a chance to laugh at myself so hard that I'm crying!

Maybe we should get it "straight from the horse's mouth" and ask DT what inspired him to choose this user name...

cmon, chill out, it's just a user name.

however, DT, i'll advise you to change your user name to avoid more controversy with the people who's user names have the word "mom" in them! ...and a couple others, too.

anyways, BACK to the USNA discussion...

I'm REALLY old then, because I thought of BOTH meanings right away. Probably a good idea to use a different screen name on a forum like this. (Just my two cents!)

I got a copy of Reef Points from the Academys Visitor Center when I was down there in August for their baseball showcase (sametime as PPW). I'll tell you, a lot of that stuff is not going to change. The mission, 11 General Orders of a Sentry, songs, etc. Mostly what changes I believe is the Chain of Command, and....not quite sure what else haven't looked at it in a while...didn't get a nomination after all. And I dont know if I will get naps.

davygravy3, sorry to hear about not getting a nomination, but if you don't get NAPs, go NROTC! :)

I think you still have to have a nomination to get into NAPS, though.

You don't need a nomination to get into Naps but you still have to apply for one to get into the academy next year.

how bout if you get a nomination for usna, get rejected, go to naps.....is that nomination still valid for when you re-apply to usna? or do you need a new one?

well, I did get my offer of appointment to the US Merchant Marine Academy. I still am waiting to hear about NROTC, but that would be a tough choice.

vcm that happened to me, i still had to reapply for the class of 2009

I was in love with this messageboard last year. Right now I'm a plebe, so I figured I could try to help ya'll out. About Reef Points, don't memorize it before hand. There are a coupla reasons for this. First of all the point of memorizing it over the summer is to develop the skill. I wasn't awesome at it, and I wasn't terrible either, but by the time AcYear rolled around I could just tell my memory was sharper. Secondly, if one of your shipmates doesn't know the answer, there's no point in you knowing it either. If you try answer that rate and show off a little, they'll immediatly forget about your buddy forgetting the rate and will probably rip your head off for bilging him out.

sounds like some nice full metal jacket action.

"midmom-

"This is true Deep Throat (love your name by the way)"

Could you explain exactly what you LOVE about this guy's screen name? Quite frankly I find this user name offensive and certainly not in keeping with the "Moral" in the USNA mission statement. Is the moderator on vacation or stuck in the snow???"

I thought the connotation would be clear to anyone with a . . . well, to just about anyone. As others have suggested, my NICKNAME is a Watergate reference.

Incidentally, there is no "moral" in the mission statement. A "morally," but definitely not a "moral." You can verify this in a bootleg copy of Reef Points.

DeepThroat

Bootleg-Produced, sold, or transported illegally: bootleg gin; bootleg tapes
I don't think you can call it a bootleg copy.

Current plebe here...DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO HELP YOURSELF....

i didn't and i paid for it. show up ready to ace (or well better than the minimums) on the prt...know reef points to a degree..and be ready to work your butt off. it would be stupid not to help yourself out by studying reef points before coming..

stress levels are ridiculous and knowing those things before you come will only help in memorizing... otherwise have fun writing it out around 100 times (no exaggeration needed) contrary to "midrightnow" i say know everything you can but don't be cocky. help out the classmates that are struggling, and don't bilge them out. by all means, don't be "that guy" who doesn't know it. believe me it stinks. a whole semester later and i am still working myself out of a reputation from a 2 or 3 bad weeks

message to davygravy3 - I sent you a private message last week and again today. Please pickup. I am interested in your information.
