refrigerator?

I'm thinking S might like/need frig for dorm room. Are they available nearby for purchase or rent- any suggestions?

Also is there a Bed Bath and Beyond in W Leb. or a similar store?

Refrigerator rentals??? Anyone??

i don't know about rentals, but if you go to this website: https://basement.dartmouth.edu/exchange/ and have your child sign in with his blitz mail name, you might find something.

I don't remember rentals because D did pick one up in West Leb after I left. Garr does have a point because sometimes students do have things they want to sell (refrigerators, futons, etc) that they will post for sale.

Are you still visiting your D at Amherst before coming to Hanover? maybe you can pick up one along the way.

if you live faraway and travel by air, hope your roommates family is from nearby and is driving and will bring one ..split the cost
if both are from distant lands then hope one family has a rental car and
drive to west leb is 10 minutes with kmart, best buy etc all there

Yes Sybbie, after much airline research and general angst, I've decided to fly to Hartford and spend the first night in Amherst, and drive to Hanover in the morning for two more nights for orientation. I figure the total drive is about the same as from Boston, with the bonus of visiting D for a night at Amherst. A shopping stop there is definitely the easiest, and hopefully there will be refrigerators left after every student in the 5 college area has finished shopping. There's a Bed Bath and Beyond in Holyoke, so we'll pick out the stuff in Dallas, and I can pick it up on my way past Holyoke in September.

His roommate is traveling far too, so I'll just buy one for both boys. I just wanted to avoid buying new only to find hundreds of used ones at dartmouth looking for homes. He's thrilled to have a nice new two-room double (in what appears to be mostly freshman housing) in McLaughlin. Maybe they can focus on finding a used sofa once there...

Thanks for the advice; you've been a huge help.

whats the deal with microwaves...seems like one would be essential in cold hanover to heat up soups, hot chocolate, etc. but are they really banned? that seems ridiculous. can students get away with still having them?

i knew a girl who had a breadmaker and just hid it under her bed when she wasn't using it.... Anyway, there is a kitchen in every dorm (and I think one on every floor in the new dorms) with a microwave in each. It can be a pain carrying a bowl of soup up three or four flights of stairs but it isn't that bad. I'm sure you can keep a microwave in your dorm without getting caught but safety is something to keep in mind.

If you are "caught" with one in your room, ORL will fine you.

Are small coffee pots and/or hot water dispensers allowed?

btw: found this link on msn for a 'reviewed' refrigerator -- shipping charges apply; but, still maybe of value if stores in West Leb sold out.

Nervousmom - I believe from my research last year that there is another BB&B in the area of Keene, NH, just off the interstate from Amherst - in case you can't find a frig in Mass. Remember, no sales tax in NH.

Thanks for that tip. I forgot NH had no sales tax.

My daughter goes to Smith, so I have made the drive from the Hartford airport and Amherst area up to Dartmouth many times. Hartford is a perfect place to fly into, and it is an easy straight shot up to Dartmouth from there. Beware the shopping in Holyoke area - very picked over for college stuff with the 5 colleges there.

Yes, but my understanding is that if we shop at home (Dallas) at Bed Bath and Beyond, they will have our order waiting for us at the Holyoke store on the specified date. Sales tax is the minor issue. What's the rate in the Holyoke area?

Sales tax in Massachusetts is 5%.

I believe that there were refrigerator rentals - signs or brochures somewhere - but we bought one. We got it at Best Buy I think, but they had them at Wal Mart also. We went on line about a week or two in advance, checked out what the different stores had, picked what we wanted, paid for it and they held it for us till we got there and picked it up. We bought the size that was within the school regulation size, but EVERYONE else D knew had the bigger one. Some rooms even had two of the bigger one stacked on top of each other.

Also not supposed to have hot pots and everyone has them. Not supposed to put sticky tape hooks on the furniture but everyone does that too.

Lounges in most, if not all, buildings, have microwaves. I would be very hesitant to put a microwave in a room.

I know lots of people who "register" at Bed, Bath and Beyond and then pick up the items close to the school. (You can also order on line for pick up at a certain store.) We just purchased and shipped because otherwise we had to go out of our way to get to the Bed, Bath and Beyond. But if you are going to do that you should probably do it VERY SOON, as many students are leaving in the next few weeks and availability of items may dwindle.

Yes, we did the Bed Bath and Beyond thing yesterday, and they said they like to have a full month to be sure everything gets there in time. Apparently the store in Keene, where I'll collect his stuff on my drive north, is a tad smaller than our 3 story mega-outlet here, but they said they'd ship up anything Keene doesn't stock (for free- including the "close out" specials we selected). He even picked out all of his toilet articles right down to the dental floss.

Best of all, I pay for everything at the New Hampshire store when I pick it up, so I THINK there will be no sales tax as opposed to ours which is 8.25%.

So Dartmouth really won't care if my fridge exceeds the designated size limit?

nlf1187 - I didn't say Dartmouth won't care if your frig exceeds the specified size. What I said was that everyone last year, other than me, pretty much ignored the size requirement. D was the only one she knew with a frig under 3 cubic feet. You can read that to mean what you want. Will the refrigerator police come around and check and take it away? Doubtful. I thought the UGAs would care but apparently they don't.
