Local big box store has a great deal on small frigs and microwaves this week. I'm wondering whether we should go ahead and buy.Does anyone know whether you can rent/buy them from USC? How about loft beds for Capstone? Do students generally have enough room without lofting? (the model room we saw had no loft, but not a lot of floor space.) Any recommendations on where to rent a sturdy loft bed? Does anyone have a price on the carpet that's available through the University? I know son will probably be in a different dorm situation next year, so I don't want to "over-purchase" . but if it's more cost-efficient to buy these things , I'd rather snag the items now while they're on sale and there is more selection than wait until the last minute. Is there a store in Columbia where a carpet remnant can be purchased at a good price? I would just as soon rent the loft and frig for a year if it's cheaper, since they probably won't be needed his soph. year. Any advice would be apppreciated. Thanks!

great thread geenville, I was thinking about posting on the exact same topic, another question, my S, also a capstone scholar requested to live in capstone, when will we know what dorm he is assigned to?

D lives in Capstone this year.

Capstone does not have lofting kits. If you want to loft you have to get your own kit but because it is an old building there are height limits.....can't be too close to the ceiling etc. D told me over the weekend that no one on their floor chose to loft beds this year. Capstone rooms are really quite large and can be arranged a number of ways to utilize the space without lofting.

I think USC had a microfridge option but we chose to bring our own since we already had one from our S. As I recall there was a large packet of information regarding carpet, microfridge etc that came in the early summer. You can also order from Sears.com and Best Buy and pick up at their Columbia locations if you don't want to haul things. Linens and Things and and Bed Bath and Beyond also offer the ability to pick out items at your home location and pick up in Columbia if you are flying or don't want to ship things. On other items , I checked with our hotel for permission and had four boxes shipped there for them to hold until we arrived. Less to pack and less to worry about.

One other thing. if you haven't already discovered this service, FedEx Ground is a really great and reasonably priced way to ship especially to Columbia. We shipped four large boxes with bedding, pillows and other items and the cost was under $50. Plus when we ship anything during the year it gets there in two days....ship from Dallas on Monday, in Columbia on Wednesday. We have found it to be faster and far less expensive than UPS or other services.

D's roommate's mom (PAmom) found very nice carpet option very reasonably at either Walmart or Target.

greenville,

My daughter lives in Capstone this year. She has a corner room, which is smaller in size than the rooms that are not on the corners. She and her roommate chose to loft their beds and I think it was a good idea in order to maximize their space. With the lofts, both girls have set up their desks and small bookcases under their beds.

There is a loft bed company that sent out information to students during the spring or summer (can't remember exactly when). We reserved a loft for rent (you can also purchase). They let you know where they will have the beds available for pick-up on move-in day (their tractor trailer was located in one of the dorm parking lots). We picked up the bed and set up the lofts (two girls and two moms did it). The lofts have to be disassembled and returned about a week before final exams. My daughter and her roommate plan to get their guy friends on the hall to help with this part of the process.

woah ,you gys are really thinking ahead !! LOL
there will be a mailing later about a carpet service that will deliver to the dorm room.We took advantage of it as we were coming rom OOS and it made it easier as it was already placed in the room for you (rolled up)
It would probably be just as easy to buy one onvce you are there from wal Mart, etc but we didnt know that at the time.
Theres no rental program at USC for microfridges/microwaves.We got one cheap from Target once we were there...really there was plenty of stock to choose from,no need to panic.
S plans on keeping his (microfridge) this year, even though he will be in an on campus apt on the Horseshoe that has a kitchen.
we also bought a TV with built in DVD player locally, also very cheap ,also Target.
You'll also get information on lofting and which dorms allow it.I know Maxcy doesnt,S has his beds bunked b/c his room is so small they HAVE to be.Im not sure about Capstone.I'm a packrat,I have all the correspondence from last year from USC,I'll try to find which mailings came when and let you know about loftbeds.
You have time, don't panic.I've said before, I did an advanced order from BBandBeyond, where you order at your home store and pick it up at the local store, but there was no need to.Theres plenty of stores with plenty of stock available in Columbia. Just make sure you have a big enough vehicle to haul everything in,we specifically rented a Minivan sized car.

BBVienna
As far as dorm assignments for incoming freshmen, you'll probably know sometime in June.Upperclassmen have received their assignmeents but I suspect they wait till after May 1 to start assigning freshmen.
Your assignment will pop up on VIP.

Thanks to all for the helpful info!

ok I found something caled the Move In Guide, which is a booklet that was mailed, but I also remember it being available to read on line (I guess enter "Move In Guide " in the search feature on the USC Home page). It outlines where lofts are allowed, and where not,the mattress sizes, move in day procedures, etc.Theres an academic calendar for 06/07 on the inside back page listing opeinig and closing dates for dorms, exam dates, holidays, breaks, etc.

by the way everybody, forgive my sloppy typing this morning.I'm doing it w/o my glasses on!!
and now I'm waiting for meal plan questions and Carolina Card questions LOL
