Refund Checks

So I’m due to get a refund check soon, but it’s sent to my home address. Before I can get the check, my mom always intercepts it and stows it away. When I ask what she does with it, she says that she’s saving it so I can pay off my student loans. My problem is that I could use that check to buy textbooks, which is understandably no cheap feat. Every time I receive money in a check form, she takes it and says she’s saving it for my student loans. I don’t have any proof of her spending it otherwise, but I think I’m old enough to properly manage my finances.

I’ve posted something similar about her being particularly controlling about my money which subsequently resulted in a very strong sense of anxiety about money: Issues with Finances

I can’t stand not knowing where my money is. I don’t like that she takes the checks, but what can I do to stop her? She says that this is all for my own good, but to be honest, I’d rather have that money in my account simply for peace of mind.

Call her on it. Tell her the checks are in your name and that they can’t be deposited unless you endorse them. Or tell her you will be canceling them because they are expired (they usually expire if not shed or deposited innsixmonths) and you will have to ask for replacement checks. Tell her what you said here. You need the money for books, etc… Your mom is being evasive and I really hope she isn’t somehow cashing the checks for herself. Hve you gota relative whose address you can use instaed? Do that if possible.

Open a bank account in your name only. Then go to your college and request direct deposit for all refunds.

You shouldn’t take a loan if you don’t need the money for school. If the refund check is for $2000 and the loan is for $3000, cut your loan down to $1000 to come out even.
