The digital packet distributed by CRH says that we’ll be quizzed about the book “Book of Unknown Americans” during the first week of school. Knowing this, what would it be beneficial to study — background info, vocabulary, character arcs, subplots, or literary mechanisms? I annotated, but it mostly consisted of underlining passages I thought were interesting. I would highly appreciate any information about this.
bump…
also, I noticed that they said we’ll “discuss” our second book option. In the handout, the books were categorized by academic department. Will we discuss them with our teacher or advisor? Should we prepare a thesis, basic talking points, questions or anything? I’m going to make a vocabulary/questions list for each book, will that suffice? One of the books that I chose was relatively difficult and I had to read supplementary material to understand it, should I mention that? How long are these discussions – 10 min? 30 min? I don’t think that they’d be longer than 10, seeing as they’d have to conduct them with the entire student body. So should I prepare about 5 minutes’ worth of talking points per each book? I guess that would amount to probably two or three interesting points per book… so I’ll have to consolidate my list.
Lastly, will we turn our books in?
@applejuice: I’ve been waiting for a student to answer with more current information, but I know you are anxious for a response. You should read the books both for understanding and enjoyment, but our son said there were no tests, just some general discussion. I hate to say that he never did the summer reading after that first packet and no one was the wiser. Please don’t be him.
Hoping @Penguins75, @prepschoolhopes, @WildBoarAnswers, or @preppedparent will chime in with more useful info.
Thanks. Also, are we supposed to get TI-84s? Are we allowed to use NSPIREs? I would assume that we’d need 84s, but I guess I’ll wait until we arrive on campus.
Just a tip- Best Buy and Office Max (and I’m sure many others) will price match the best price you find advertised (usually has to be another brick and mortar store or Amazon). I saved $40 on a Swissgear backpack and $30 on a T1-84C this week at Office Max. I was also able to use a $10 coupon from a previous purchase.
