If you have applied to a few places and the FA packages have come in and you have made your choice, do you go into the others online and decline the FA awards or do something similar? Or just do nothing and they'll know you aren't going if you didn't reply that you were coming? Or is each so different that there is no set way to do this? I think our decision is made and figured it would be nice to let the others know but didn't know the way to handle all this for sure, being our first time.

Or maybe best to send a message to admissions counselor and they do what needs to be done on their end? Clueless here.

The polite thing to do is to notify admissions that you will not be attending. This way, someone who is on a waitlist will have the opportunity to attend.

I am relatively certain that if you notify the admissions department that your student is not coming, they will handle the cancellation of everything else that entails -- contacting the housing department, financial aid, etc.

The exception to this is likely to be in funding outside of the school itself, with special scholarships, for example. If that is the case, I highly recommend tracking down contact info and thanking them for their generosity and letting them know that the student has chosen to attend somewhere else.
