Depends on which college (Letters and Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Natural Resources).

All freshmen entering Letters and Science enter as undeclared and declare majors around sophomore year. A few capped majors require applying to declare.

Freshmen entering Engineering, Chemistry, or Natural Resources may enter declared as a major. Those entering Engineering or Natural Resources may also enter undeclared, to declare later.

Procedure and difficulty of changing college and major varies, mainly by the target college and major. The selectivity of different colleges and majors (both for freshman and transfer admission and changing into after enrolling) varies, depending on how popular they are. For example, the College of Engineering’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science major is generally regarded to be one of the more difficult majors to get into either as a new freshman or transfer or as an enrolled student), but the College of Letters and Science’s Computer Science major is not capped and therefore relatively easy to declare after completing the course prerequisites (both majors select Computer Science courses from the same set of courses).

The School of Business does not accept freshmen; freshmen have to complete the prerequisites for the Business major and then apply to change to the School of Business and Business major.
