Regents' and Chancellor's Scholarship Interview

Hey, I have my Regents' and Chancellor's interview at UC Berkeley on Tuesday. I have two quick questions to ask:

(1) How should you dress for the interview? casual? formal? semi-formal?
(2) Is it necessary to have recommendation letters? because I don't have any.
(3) What kind of questions do they ask you?
(4) What are some things to keep in mind/ what to say/ what not to say for the interview?

thanks!

(1) presentable
(2) No
(3) It depends. They usually start with your app essays and go anywhere from there.
(4) Be yourself.

@iVinshe

What do you mean presentable? And if I don't have rec letters, does it ruin my chances of getting the scholarship?

thx

If you can have letters, it's probably good, but I don't think it's necessary. I forget if I had them, but I think I did.

Dress reasonably well, but don't worry about it too much.

They'll ask you mainly about your application essays, and probably tell you to elaborate. Most likely, the professor has given your application essay a thorough read and sees what you wrote, and would like to find out more about it.

Yes, be yourself to number 4. Try to show interest in the school, however. Remember, also, that a professor at Berkeley very likely is a cutting edge, leading researcher in his/her field, and is MOST LIKELY more accomplished than any peers you know will ever be, no matter what you do. These guys are big shots. That doesn't mean you act submissive, but it means you go in genuinely appreciating that they're speaking to you, and try to look upon it as a great chance to learn about your opportunities at the school from nothing short of a star.

My professor told me that 50% of the people getting interviewed will get the scholarship. Is this true? For some reason I thought the number was significantly lower..

Last year, 15XX people were interviewed, and 5XX were offered the scholarship. Keep in mind that the 5XX includes OoS applicants and JC transfers, while the 15XX does not.

Oh wow...
So once you go to the interview, the only thing that decides if you get the scholarship or not is how well your interviewer grades you? Or do they reevaluate you again with your essay, stats, etc, + interview?
My interviewer seemed to love me. I made it really clear that I love Cal and we were just talking and laughing the whole time. I think Regents Day as a whole was just SUCH a fun experience, haha.

I would somehow doubt that it's only based on your interview. The reason being that notice -- OOS applicants don't even have an interview really, and so it's their overall applications that will determine whether they get the scholarship.

I'd think that if this is how it's done for OOS people, for the in state ones, it's a mixture of both your overall application and interview.

So I know check in time is an hour before the interview, but are we expected to show up promptly or is it that we have the option of checking in from that time until our interview time? If we indeed are supposed to be there an hour early, what do we do while we're waiting?

Bump..anyone know? Help much appreciated.

Um...I'm not sure but I think it would be fine if you checked in from that time until your interview time. When you check in they just give you a map of the school and the location/name of the professor who is interviewing you, so you definitely don't want to get there at like 1:45 if your interview is at 2:00 because the professors are in different buildings around campus.
While you're waiting you could just walk around the school if you want, visit the campus store, etc. lol

Oh, you can also check in way earlier than the time they tell you to, if you want.
My interview was at 3pm but I wanted to go on the campus tour at 11am and go to the luncheon at noon so I got to the International House at about 10:50am and just checked in. Then after the tour and luncheon I had from about 1:00 - 2:30 to do whatever I wanted. So you also have the option of checking in earlier than the time they tell you too.

Yeah, you want to save some time to walk to your interview site. And..it's hard to find parking.

Is it me or was the way they told you you were accepted to Cal so...anti-climatic? Not surprising? The lady told me to get my name sticker and then said " oh and you got into Cal."

Oh I just assumed that the interviews would be at International House haha. So I actually have to go find the professor who's interviewing me? And if I'm not mistaken, the luncheon and the tours take place/meet at I-House?

alithyiaiden- maybe they're tired of saying the same thing year after year lol.

Thanks for the responses!

Yes to all your questions, haha.

Not that it matters anymore, since today is the last round of I-house interviews, but Annahead Parking Lot on Channing between Telegraph and Bowditch almost always has spaces. Underhill, between Unit 1 and 2, does too.

BUMPPP.
Any other anxious Regents scholars out there? :/
26th seems like such a long time away...

If you actually get the scholarship does it allow for any summer sessions, or only the regular semesters?

When other Regents candidates log on to myberkeleyapp, is your little Regents box gone?
Does it only say "your application is in review, it will be available 3/26" or whatever?
