Haha, you know the education system in this country is in trouble when the ILLEGALS are smarter than the citizens! LOL

Xiggi- according to my DD her fellow students are discussing some sort of proposal that is on the table about allowing financial aid. Some of the LA radio shows are also talking about it. I am guessing it is a proposal not done yet.

DD says many of the conversations about the tuition pickets is ending up at the illegal alien discussion…with Berkeley kids. Just adding it to the mix. I have no clue how many illegal aliens with in state tuition attend the UCs.

I think that the rest of the USA is looking at California and the UC system and just doesn’t get what all the fuss is about. For IS students, the costs are now about in-line with where they should have been, ie, similar to top publics like W&M, U Illinois and U Michigan. And it’s still cheaper than places like Penn State. LOL.

Anyone that can read and has a brain has known that public schools are in trouble and need to find new revenue to sustain themselves. OOS students are a nice, and for schools like UCB & UCLA, relatively easy source to go fishing in. Even more so, these UCs can tap into the status-obsessed (and probably not too well informed) non-US families who will pay the full freight to see their child enroll and pull on a UC Berkeley or UCLA sweatshirt.

Frankly, many of the rest of us across the country read the papers and watch the news and wonder when the political backlash is going to start in California. The Dems (and the RINOs) have run the state into a fiscal ditch and think that the government will always be able to rob the golden geese of the state to pay for all of their fantasies. Is anybody really and truly surprised that this is the outcome? And, just as was the case with the state budget “solutions” that were crafted earlier this year, these tuition & fee increases are probably still not enough to solve the budget problems of the UCs.

“Many of the kids today are picketing and are concerned with getting financial aid to illegal aliens, this is a big topic of discussion.”
I find this very disappointing.

Do the students have any clue how much aid is given to illegals?

Or is the demonizing already there in the 20 year-olds minds? I was hoping for something better with the up and coming generation.

There have been protests by students at UCLA over this also. It’s ridiculous. These students feel that taxpayers aren’t subsidizing their education ‘enough’ for them they want even more from the backs of the taxpayers. I think instead of protesting they should sink that effort into getting a p/t job and giving those funds to the Uni to help the situation rather than perform juvenile irritant pranks like pulling fire alarms and dumping trash all over the place (so much for supposedly environment conscious students at Berkeley) and disrupting the very thing they purport to support - students taking classes and getting an education (i.e. classes having to be canceled thanks to these protesters). There are plenty of these students who don’t bother to get p/t jobs during the school year or even in the summer to contribute to their own education yet they protest that the taxpayers aren’t providing enough for them. These protesters act like spoiled children to me. Many of these students won’t be affected by the increase anyway depending on their family income - they should read the details.

Here is the current tuition before the increase. The increase will push the TCA over $30,00 in-state and over $54,000 OOS. These are the numbers one needs to use when comparing between states.

… Living on Campus…Living off Campus…Living at Home
Registration & Fees**… $ 9,748…$ 9,748…$ 9,748
Housing & utilities… 14,384…7,542…2,472
Food… 924…2,494…1,806
Books and supplies… 1,306…1,306…1,306
Personal expenses… 1,336…1,474…1,856
Transportation… 614…1,030…1,946
Total… $28,312…$23,594…$19,134

http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/general.asp?id=26

For example at the University of Washington the current on-campus TCA is $20,445 and OOS $37,120. The increase for next year in tuition will be 14.5%. A UC will be about $10,000 more for CA residents than UW will be for WA residents. <a href=“Student Financial Aid”>Student Financial Aid;

Am I reading this right? How can food cost more living at home?

I always ignore those numbers relating to ‘food’ and ‘personal expenses’ because they vary with every student and my kids always seemed to be way under what they designated and besides, they’d generally have those costs whether they attended that college or not. But I agree - eating at home should be the least expensive.

“Many of the kids today are picketing and are concerned with getting financial aid to illegal aliens, this is a big topic of discussion.”

I’m confused. Are the kids concerned that illegals will be getting FA or are they concerned that they won’t be getting FA?

“How can food cost more living at home?”

because their parents are driving them nuts and they skip the homed cooks meals for a dark booth at the local Denny’s.

dstark:

I’m guessing that students are walking to SUPPORT finaid for undocumenteds…right now, non-citizens are not eligible for any state (or federal) need-based aid.

Concur, and also moronic. These kids need to go back to AP Gov, and think about where the money comes from. The Regents can’t do squat about the economy or tax base. Nor can the Regents “force” the Legislature to cough up more money. If students want to protest their plight, of which I am extremely empathetic, they should take it on the road to Sacramento. To paraphrase Willie Sutton, ‘that’s where the money is…’

**
…Living on Campus…Living off Campus…Living at Home

Food… 924…2,494… …1,806**

Something’s not right (or I’m reading this wrong). But what meal plan is only $924 a year (that would be less than $500 a semester).

^^ I assume that it’s in the category of ‘food costs for living off campus’. For on-campus living the food costs are generally bundled in with housing as housing/dining.

‘musicamusica’ must have the correct theory.

“I’m guessing that students are walking to SUPPORT finaid for undocumenteds…right now, non-citizens are not eligible for any state (or federal) need-based aid.”

Then my faith in the UCs and the students is restored. :)

I get it, that’s $924 above and beyond the actual meal plan.

I would be pretty peeved too if my tuition rate had suddenly jumped 30%+. Why didn’t they implement this in steps?

What happens to the financial aid of students already enrolled, sophomores and such? Are they expected to make up the difference in loans (assuming they can’t afford to pay more cash)?

The following has some details as to the implementation of the increase and any effects on those with finAid -
[University of California - UC Newsroom | Regents approve budget plan, student fee increases](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/article/22414)

^^^^

Does this mean if your family earns under $70 (or custodial parent), then all your fees (aka tuition) is covered?

And, does it mean that the “increase amount” will be covered for those with incomes between $70k and $180k for the next year or so?

If so, this sounds like a plan that will encourage a lot of dishonesty. People claiming to be separated who aren’t, and other nonsense.

But, maybe I’m not understanding this. LOL

"‘I’m guessing that students are walking to SUPPORT finaid for undocumenteds…right now, non-citizens are not eligible for any state (or federal) need-based aid.’

“Then my faith in the UCs and the students is restored.”

wonders never cease, how incredibly different people’s views can be. as most of these “undocumented” kids in calif are from messico, let us look to that advaqnced country for guidance. how generous is need-based aid for calif students who would attend universidad nacional autonoma de mexico?

OT, lately a lot of illegal people are from China through the Mexico border.
