I just noticed that they opened registration for Open House/Admitted Students Day. Just google Cal Poly Open House 2017 and it will be the first link.
We saw that as well. However last week we received a voicemail stating we’d get an email invitation to that event. So thinking we’ll wait another day or two for that email to arrive.
If my D had already been on a campus tour before, would it still be beneficial to go to the open house?
@slofan , we have also toured SLO, but we are still planning to attwnd. That Friday is Admitted Students Day and they have a lot going on, such as presentations from the various colleges, clubs, etc. I also know they have an event on Friday night just for the students. I’ve heard it is a great day, as it is much more in depth than a tour.
Thank you very much, @Tannison. In that case, I guess we’re going then.
We have toured before, but are still coming from Nebraska to attend the open house. I think it will be really benficial for my daughter to get to know other students as early as possible.
That’s a really good idea, @jayphoto.
We’ve done the prospective student tour already but also plan to attend the open house for more in depth and college specific engineering activities/agenda. We’ve heard it’s very worthwhile even though for us it will still be part of the selection process.
We are looking at going to this, but for us too, it is simply part of selection process. Given that it is on school week and in addition other UCs also have events the same week, we are wondering if we just go for admit day. Would that experience be sufficient to truly gauge?
We can attend the Open house on a day Friday. Open house is starting from Thursday evening and all the way until Saturday. Any experiences to share which days are important and should not miss? This is one of our top colleges, my son like to get a feel on academics, social life and housing. Any experiences?
@Madrocks and @hightech2017 - based on everything I have heard, Friday (which is the Admitted Students Day) is the most beneficial day to attend. It will have various programs and sessions for the individual colleges, tours of the campus and dorms, activities for just the admitted students and parents, etc.
@Tanison thanks.
@Tanison, thank you for the response. I found the following link for details on the events

We will mostly go on Friday.
If possible, try to go to the full open house. Thursday night farmer’s market is fantastic- gives you a feel for the general environment of SLO plus the food is amazing, Friday is very important and will give you the chance to meet other admitted students in the same major (for parents- LOTS of valuable info this day) and Saturday is just fun and gives you the chance to see some of the CP culture! I highly recommend the whole experience. My daughter committed on her cell phone on Saturday afternoon last year- it was just that fantastic. And yes- open house is a true example of CP college life. It really is that amazing. Also- book your hotel room/rental ASAP. It’s already filling up!
Thanks @lovingmyfam for sharing the experience.
Thanks for the perspective @lovingmyfam. UCSB, UCSD and UCD all have their open houses on Saturday. I think many will go to SLO on Friday and then trek to one of the UCs on Saturday.
How valuable is it for a student who already spent a full day on campus and took the physical science, general campus and housing tours?
@VickiSoCal One of our most valuable parts of the open house last year was the time spent with the professors and other students (a luncheon) that the Electrical Engineering Department put on for the kids. Each department had some kind of luncheon. At ours, there were maybe 75 admitted kids with their parents/families. The department sent several EE professors including the head of the department and about 20 current students to the luncheon. We were able to spend time asking one on one questions. Daughter was also able to meet several other kids and quickly felt right at home. If you have already toured the campus/housing and department you have a good idea, but that extra time we had last year was special.
Got my confirmation email for the open house earlier this week.
I went to the open house 2 years ago. You arrive and check in at the prescribed point. Then, your college specific team leader walks you all to your specific college. Mine was for the business college (called OCOB, Orfalea College Of Business).
At OCOB each major had a presentation where invited guest speakers (previous grads that went on to succeed in industry) gave hour long presentations. They also took time for Q & A. I went to the Econ demo, and a few others. You have to pick the demos you think are of interest to you because some were scheduled at the same times. Somewhere is a webpage that has the hour by hour schedule for the day and presentations and the locations of said demos.
Outside of OCOB, there were informational tables set up according to concentration. The staffers had the form that you fill out to declare your concentration.
OCOB tours were every half hour.
Parking was a bear.
