I am looking at the Catalog at UMich and most of Calculus II and Honors Calculus I classes have merely 5-10 seats left in total for all timings.

I am a bit confused here. Honors Calculus I requires permission of instructor so how can I enroll in them??

What is the ideal time for choosing classes as an international student?

If it asks for permission from the instructor, you will need to email that instructor and get permission. I have no idea how international students register. I would contact the admissions office. Regular students register in the summer and are assigned a adviser. Here are a few tips, if a class says it is full the session you register, then get on the waitlist and keep checking, because they reserve spots for each session during the summer and kids can sign-up any time, not just during your session. My kids often got into classes in the first week of school when the professor let them in. They also often signed up for an extra class to see if they wanted to drop another one later, making sure to drop within the period you can drop without getting penalized with a “withdrawal” on your transcript.

Regarding the number of seats–some of those occupied spots are ones that have been blocked off for entering students, and you can register for them during orientation. For any student, the earlier an orientation you can choose, the better.

For international student, the orientation is one week earlier than the fall orientation for domestic students. I am not sure if you can come early and join the summer orientation in June & July as there is subtle difference in the international orientation.
