How much of a disadvantage is it if you wait until orientation in August to register for courses?

It’s always nice to know going into the year what classes you’re taking, but other than peace of mind, registering early would only be helpful if you’re not planning on taking large intro level classes (usually in maths/sciences).

So would a smaller class (especially a foreign language such as Chinese or Korean) be harder to get into if you register in August?

It’s quite possible that something like first year korean (which currently appears to only have 11 open spots) may be completely filled up by August. I’m not sure which courses tend to fill up before August as I took only large gen. ed. classes first semester. Another thing to consider - even though a particular course may have openings in August, it’s possible that you may not receive your preferred time

Thanks very much!

A lot depends on your classes. Math and science you are guaranteed a first year class, but not section times. Most other areas don’t have offers like this, and you may have to wait a while to take a class you want.

You can get a good idea of looking at class enrollments / total sizes of last year.

To summarize what others have said: you’re pretty much guaranteed to get into the “standard” intro courses (think calculus, chem, etc). However, you may get poor lab/recitation times if you’re waiting until August. But in all honesty, it’s not a big deal.

Were I in artsci, I would not have spent the money to go to an artsci weekend.
(I’m engineering, and engineers register over the summer anyway).

That reminds me – am I really at a disadvantage in registering for classes if I don’t fly out to attend the engineering weekend in July?

Thanks.

i did an artsci wknd and am very glad i registered early - i got into the spanish 307 section with the prof i wanted (there are ~15 in a class) as well as was able to switch taking writing 1 from second semester to first which my advisor told me i wouldn’t have been able to do if i waited until august. but like a lot of people have said before, you’re guaranteed to get into the an intro class but higher level or smaller classes are somewhat difficult. i’d suggest that if you’re interested in taking some small classes or a few 300 level you might be better off trying to register before orientation

When do most people get to register? I thought everyone, except for maybe the ArtSci people, had to wait until August.

Nope, other schools get to register earlier - don’t know the dates though.
