Rejected and lost all hope for the ivies club

sorry I was flipping between threads. No disrespect intended. worried about some of the ignorant and jerking comments made and I forgot where I was sitting at the moment.

It’s fine @conputerdad. Congrats to your son btw

@houstonmom2, I applied for financial aid so I guess that did not help much

@fancywolverine, yes! Their rejection was very impersonal, but I guess I should start getting used to such impersonal rejections lol.

I really appreciate everything everyone is saying.

Hey so I’ve been occasionally stalking college confidential for several months and absolutely hate what it stands for. I think it breeds fear, panic, and insecurity completely unnecessarily. That being said I still read it from time to time. I have yet to register and get an account that allows me to comment because up until this point I haven’t felt it necessary to add anything to this ridiculous forum. When I saw your comment though I just wanted to let you know you aren’t alone. I got deferred from Georgetown EA and although it was not my absolute number one, it bodied my confidence. How was I supposed to get into anywhere of comparable or better status if I couldn’t get in there? The kicker is that I had a double legacy at Georgetown and if that didn’t help there, I thought I was sunk everywhere else. Low and behold I got into WashU. All I’m here to say is have faith. This whole process is extremely random and weird. One school not taking a chance on you for whatever reason, is completely unrelated to any other school’s decision. I’m just here to say, I feel your pain and don’t despair. All is not lost. When I got my Gtown deferral I found a similar post to this one and have kept it on my desktop on a sticky to remind myself I’m not alone. Hope this helped.

No worries, I was rejected as well.
It was my first rejection, so I’m extremely nervous as well for the other schools I applied to, but honestly, it’s just luck. My brother was rejected at MIT (and this was the first school he got a decision letter about), and as it turned out, he got accepted to all his other choices; Harvard, Columbia, UPenn, Duke…that just goes to show how random their selections are because it is so competitive and everyone is so good.
So don’t lose, hope, I’m sure you will end up going at the best school that was set out for you.
Wish you the best!

@Freckles, thanks! Must have been especially hard because you had to wait months to get another “reach” school decision. I have to keep reminding myself that I still have 6 more reaches to hear from, and I now have hope that at least one of them will accept me. Good luck at WUSTL.

@Colombiana228, thanks and also good luck on your college decisions. We only have less than a month to hear back from all colleges so we are not in as bad as a situation as those who got rejected early decision/action and had to wait months. If you don’t mind, tell me how everything works out for you.

Less than 3 weeks guys (for the March 29 ones)!!! Ironically, my WUSTL waitlist decision has made me more excited rather than nervous about the rest of my decisions. I feel like it’s because I browsed all these threads about people getting rejected/WLed to WUSTL but still ending up in wonderful places.

Ahhh I really really hope we all get into our #1s :)

What houstonmom meant by not need blind:
Many top schools don’t look at anything related to your financial need prior to making their acceptance decisions. WashU does consider it in some way. The estimate is that for the last 2-8% of their accepted students financial need is a determining factor. I believe they offer about 3,500 RD acceptances. Say they are looking a 1,000 applications that they are undecided about for the last 100-300 spots - they will give those spots to applicants in that pool of 1,000 that would pay full (requested no financial aid).

There were still 3,200 RD acceptances where financial aid was not a factor.

I know this is what “rejects” often say, but I actually mean it when I say WUSTL is not for me. Any school that may have based my decision on whether I can pay or not is not for me. However, i do see where they come from when they consider willingness to pay. I also heard that they care about demonstrated interest, but my family could only afford to visit 2 colleges(LOL). I am so glad I made this thread. You guys are very convincing.
@aforambition, i know you’ll also end up somewhere great  As of now, I just want at least one of my reaches, not necessarily my top choice.

Did you visit any of your reach schools?

If you had researched Wash U, you would have know they place importance on demonstrated interest. If Wash U was one of your top two schools, you should have visited. There are also a lot of other ways to demonstrate interest. Local Info Session, local interview with alumni, sending letters, applying for scholarships, calling and emailing the admin person assigned to you (provided on Pathway).

If you are troubled by a college basing 300 of 3,500 offers on financial need, one might consider that picky. Over 90% of decisions had nothing to do with your ability to pay.

Admissions is a crap shoot. The process is holistic and just because you were rejected does not mean that you will be rejected elsewhere. We have a friend who was rejected by Wash U and Duke but accepted by Harvard. It all works out in the end.

I can give another example; my counselor had said that WashU acts a bit strange with their admissions and she had a student who was accepted to Princeton and Yale but waitlisted by WashU, so don’t be let down, you still have a chance at other great schools!

70% of those accepted RD decline Wash U’s offer. Wash U is trying to select students that are interested. They may project yhat highly qualified applicants that so no interest have applied to Wash U as a safety school. They aren’t interested in being a safety school.

Hey, you probably have a WAY better chance at those other schools than I do. I’ll probably end up going to a state school, but it happens. I was devastated when I got my rejection e-mail from Rice after I applied ED. Worst two minutes of my LIFE! I moved on, nonetheless, haha. At least WUSTL sent a letter delineating their regret, haha. Keep the faith!

Don’t read too much into it.

My brother’s kid, last year, got into Cornell, but got rejected at Syracuse.

So it is a crapshoot.

Almost random.

Don’t worry, I would love to go to WashU, I visited the campus and really did love it, but it wasn’t one of my top choices. I got waitlisted. I cried for about an hour afterwards because I was so heartbroken. My thought process was, if I couldn’t get into WashU how was I ever going to get into any of the Ivies? I feel better about it now so try not to worry, there are a lot of people in the same boat as you. :)

I ditto that… don’t worry. My son got rejected from WashU, but got accepted at UChicago and UVA (Echols program). But believe me I undertand your anxiety, we too are wainting for other decisions. Best of luck!!!

OP, you have a 27 on the ACT… how could this rejection or any further rejections be even a surprise to get you depressed?

A friend of mine was rejected by WashU, then got a likely letter from Columbia.

Seriously, don’t worry about it.

I think all acceptances are a crapshoot. My daughter was waitlisted at some accepted at others and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it. She had friends accepted where she was waitlisted an visa versa. Just keep the faith that you will find a match.

You guys have all been very supportive. It’s been over 3 weeks and I decided to come back to the WUSTL thread and give an update.

WUSTL was my first rejection, and my first decision from a reach school. I lost all hope for my other reaches on that weekend. Going to a reach school was not just about elitism for me. It was mostly about money. It would have been cheaper for me to go to one of my reach schools(which have the <$60,000 in income and full ride deal) than to go to my state flagship school.

I just want to let the juniors/sophomores reading this to know that WUSTL may be your 1st RD reach school decision(they release decisions early March). Do NOT give up hope if you are waitlisted/rejected. We heard the whole “college decisions are so random” thing as juniors but until you are a senior and finally face a surprising acceptance after multiple rejections will you truly understand. It’s all about “fit”. The WUSTL admissions office saw I wasn’t a good fit and I respect their decision. Thanks for all of your encouraging words and congrats to admitted students!

I am now going on nearly a full ride to Johns Hopkins University :)

Juniors-Don’t let the “less than 30/less than 2000 ACT/SAT” thing going on at CC bring you down. Don’t expect all acceptances with such scores, but don’t expect all rejections. I know I’m URM and some of you may say “I don’t count” but my best friend, who is half Asian(Chinese) and half white is going to Columbia U. this fall with a 29 ACT. She thought it was the end of it all after multiple rejections on the “Ivy league doomsday” lol.
