Rejected as freshman = banned for life?

I'm not trying to be cruel on this one, but I have to be honest.

mercurysquad is a great guy, no doubt, but sometimes we bite off more than we can chew... and set our hopes too high.

Domestic Chicano male, accepted and attending. Lived in Los Angeles. Former illegal immigrant, current U.S. Citizen.

3.92 / 4.0 unweighted (School didn''t weight)
SAT: 780 Math, 730 Verbal (1510)
National Hispanic Scholar Finalist (took care of ~1/2 my Student Contribution freshman year :)) with a 216

Never took an AP course, my school didn't offer any. I took the honors courses (self-taught Calculus) , and the AP tests however, and here were my scores:

World/European/United States History: 5/4/5
AB/BC Calculus: 5/4
A(C)/AB(Java) Computer Science: 4/5
Language/Literature Spanish: 5/4
Chemistry/Physics/Biology: 4/4/5

These tests were expensive, the only way I was able to afford them was by working 20 hours a week at a local electronics store (radio-shack type of thing).

I founded the Latino Calculus Team (LCT), and was an active member (and captain) throughout high school.
Starting striker on varsity (soccer) from Sophomore through Senior year. Captain senior year.

My school was horrible. Pregnancy, drug abuse, police issues. My problem was that I wasn't a citizen, and couldn't go to any private schools (couldn't afford them either).

I am not your stereotypical minority who depends on Affirmative Action to get ahead. Do not pull the race card on me. I have done nothing but excel my entire life, and am now reaping the benefits.

I wish you well mercurysquad, but sometimes your posts make me think otherwise.

MIT_Boy, it's not because I regard myself too highly. It's because I'm not willing to accept a defeat and live with that. Ok agreed I was not good enough this year, so it's only natural for me to analyze and improve. I mean why on earth would I post on a public forum that "I DID NOT GET IN DESPITE BEING SUPER." I'm not fishing for consolation or trying to prove that MIT's decision was wrong or trying to make a big deal out of it. I know a couple of '09 acceptees very closely and I can say there's nothing wrong with the selection procedure.

MIT is a dream for me. A very big dream, and it's not going to be easy. You spoke about working 20 hrs a day to pay for the test fees. I did, too. I paid for the SATs using money I earned from selling my MIDI files on singlouder.com. That's one example. I worked really hard for this, and I can say this unabashedly because I know. Seeing all my efforts crumbling to pieces is not a good feeling.

I know I wasn't strong enough, and that is what I'm asking for help with. Hence the title (that if I got rejected once, do I still stand a chance of getting accepted?). If that made me look like I'm conceited, then I'm sorry.

My exact thoughts.

and MIT_Boy - The standard of living in Indonesia and India is about the same, and just because you've overcome obstacles in your life it doesn't give you the right to judge people. There are many ppl like you, who have also worked equally hard, or maybe harder but unfortunately are not reaping benefits today.

Can you still try for the IOI team from India? That'll probably guarantee admission.

I don't understand why mercury is "shooting too high". Despite the fact that I don't believe in such a cliche, his stats seem just as impressive as MIT_boy's, mine, and other MIT students/admittees that I've seen.

So to answer your question mercury, no, you're not banned from life nor undergradutes school even.

I agree with emmittisgod. Apply again next year mercurysquad...I'm sure undergrad will happen for you!

"So it boils down to scores. My point is proven, thanks.
I should probably go and study now... got a test on 8th May.

But honestly, you might be right...
I'll still re-apply though. No harm in that."

The guy you posted got gold in IMO and IPho

even if he had 900 in his SAT he would still get in. It would show the SAT's are flawed not him.

Youre being a bit melodramatic with the whole banned for life thing. Its just a school like any other.

Erm.. I was referring to the fact that MIT_Boy commented on the scores but not olympiad. (he posted a similar comment on my blog long back).

asiaknight: I'm not on olympiad level for anything other than maybe Informatics... and it's open only to students who are in a school! :( But surely there are reasons to accept someone who does not have an olympiad medal... that is what I am aiming at right now (since I have a few CS related credentials, so its ok).

And melodramatic - sorry, I realized that long back :o ...but it really is more than "just a school".... and it's nothing to be ashamed / made a big deal of.

I guess we should let this thread die in peace since it's wandered way off topic. All I did was ask for suggestions on how to satisfy Bio and Chem requirements when I apply for transfer, or whether I should drop a year and apply as freshman. :-/

I say drop a year, and apply as a freshman. You have a much better chance that way than transferring.

If you have AP credits for Bio and Chem, try to bring them up.

I don't know how your school system works, so I'd say re-apply.

Hmm actually, 5 out of 319 got accepted as transfer last year. And that is almost equal to acceptance rate for Indian freshman applicants (Matt McGann said "several hundred" students from India apply to MIT, and about 4 or 5 get accepted each year). So the rates are the same.

I'm worried that dropping another year will be seen as something bad, considering I'll be 19 then (I already have a year off!).

how about go to England in Feburary, do an year, and apply as a transfer from there?

Come on MIT_boy; merc. I had the exact same prob. like you. I too droped a year for IIT (Got in didn't go); But i applied to 8 good US colleges and got accepted into 4 (but MIT didn't take me).

I am joining a UC. No, probs.

Merc. don't give up. Best of luck.

When is the IITJEE this year, howz your prep.?

Though I didn't get into MIT this time, I will try again for graduate studies. Never give up hope.

What the hell!? Why aren't you shooting for IIT?! omg

WHY THE HELL DONT YOU GUYS JUST RESPOND TO MY QUERY??!??!!!

I have 1001 things to say about IIT so don't get me started on that.
I ASKED A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT REAPPLYING TO MIT.

I'm sorry but I'm really losing it now...

I got rejected this year - I WANT TO RE-APPLY.
PERIOD.

What's so incomprehensible?!?!
This is not obsession, this is determination.
Unless MIT has something personal against me, there is no way a person will be rejected if he/she tries to work on the weaker parts of his/her app and brings them on par with MIT's standards. This is not impossible. And I'll show this.

well i hope you make it.I will apply this summer 2.I hope we both make it:P
Remember though,if you are good, you will be successful anywhere. If you are,yet again, rejected, its MITs loss. Even Mr.Ben wrote that they had to turn down many good and qualified students. Each one of them is MITs loss.So keep your options open.In a world where a community college graduate is an astronaut, hope should never be lost.I repeat, keep your options open. Fo example, every year MIT admits students for graduate degree from METU (Middle East Technical University) which is in Turkey,as other great colleges.(the number of turkish students from METU going to USA with scholarships and housing offered from various colleges is extremely high!) But nobody on this board knows METU,does that mean its a bad school?Certainly not.Type METU in MIT's search and see for yourself.Microsoft recruits 5 programmer's every year from that school, does anybody know about that? They come to Istanbul turkey, call the students from Ankara (the capital where the students are),give them free rooms in great hotels, interview them. Then they take the selected ones to USA. To go to METU you have the be in the top 99 percentile of 1.800.000+ for the worse departments in the university. you have to be in the top 800 of the same number of kids for the best departments (actually theyre all good-cut off system in turkey), whilst being SOOO selective does anyone know about that school on this board? no. But i do, and i will go there, be with the best. (who are not grass hoppers always around books like you might think they are, lots of festivals etc...great people) then i will go to USA.(If i am rejected from MIT and 2/3 other schools-MIT is always my clear first choice-)

To make the long story short, what ever school you go to,try your best.It always i rewarding, regardless the school you were admitted to.I bet there are people from MIT,working at slacky jobs, living on their school's name,as there are guys receiving nobel prizes and researching the world's future.MIT is an oppurtunity, not a key,and its not the only one.And as someone once wrote, its a privilige not a right.
"Even Mr.Ben wrote that they had to turn down many good and qualified students."

take care all the MIT board.
greetings to Mr.Ben

manofallseasons

this is the sort of criticism that's always welcome :)
i do have options. but it's so much better to work at getting in at your top choice, isnt it?
it's the question of "match"... there is IIT here, which is like METU that you spoke of, but it's certainly not a match for me (i dont fit the profile and dont have the temperament for it). for me, what's taught and how it's taught (i.e. the 4 years i'll spend) are more important than where i'll stand after graduation. jobs will always follow..
but yes, i do understand that if MIT doesnt happen to me, it's not the end of the world.

just saw ur post n saw its a long dated post.
i believe u can make it there cos a will is what is needed for a way to emerge. i believe u can.
take care.
