Rejected at WUStL; Should I Be Worried?

If it’s any consolation at all, my youngest D went through a very similar gamut of emotions, and we told her the exact same thing. Long story short, hardly a year later, she says she barely remembers those emotions…remember your finest moments are yet to come.

Another stressed applicant here, and what I’m telling myself is that each college’s admissions process is its own separate roll of the dice, unaffected by the outcome of the others - there is always hope.

I know how hard it is to think about anything other than colleges - personally, I’ve poured so much of myself into the admissions process that I don’t think I can detach anymore. But in just a little more than a week, this will all be over (!!) and you’ll end up going somewhere amazing

You’ve received acceptances from AMAZING schools that many, many students would be thrilled to attend.

Consider anything else as gravy and I agree with others, step away from CC and go do something else. There’s nothing you can do anyway, and worst case scenario, you’ve already been accepted at school where you’ll get a top notch education allowing you to accomplish any career goals you might have.

It seems like you get pretty good background, especially the SAT, GPA and ranking. It seems pretty matching with those Ivy school. Again, admission process is tricky.
But don’t worry about WUstL, I have some friends that is rejected from WUstL and also get in other Ivys.

Also, could you chance me back please?

I can relate to the level of stress you’re projecting here, but it’s so much easier to see how unnecessary that is as an outsider! You’ve already gotten into great schools. And it is entirely possible that you would still get into Duke (for example) after being waitlisted at Pomona. Not every admissions officer will see you in the same light. You have a lot to look forward to, even if you don’t get in to any more schools!

Thanks, everyone! I’m still really perplexed about the wait-list at Bates. Any thoughts?

It may have come down to fit - perhaps your essays didn’t convey that? Or did you express interest consistently?

Perhaps. I thought my essay was fair, but I did apply at the last minute and I never visited, did an interview, or anything like that…

Again, so why are you so befuddled? It appears, at best, you had marginal interest in the school. Schools are very attuned to students who exhibit earnest interest in their institution, conversely, many schools are also aware when they are a low priority on a 10-12 school shotgun list. Bottom line, would you have attended if you were accepted, if not, no harm, no foul, move on.

I’m in the same boat as you. I have a 2270 SAT, 790 Math II, 760 Bio-m and a 3.9 gpa. Again, I have good but not spectacular ECs. I too was wait listed at Wash. U and just yesterday I was waitlisted at BU. Pretty disheartening.

@Cicero1, it looks like you applied to at least 21 schools, and by your own admission you did the Bates application at the last minute and never visited the school. I wouldn’t be surprised if your application didn’t reflect familiarity with and understanding of the college culture, something the Bates admissions committee values. What did you write your Mission Statement essay on?

BTW, congrats on your many acceptance!

Bates received close to 6,000 applications for 500 spots, half of which were filled in Early Decision. It is not a reflection on you as much as it is timing. So basically about 5000 kids applied for the remaining 250 spots. Non-recruited females have the lowest acceptance rates and if you didn’t interview it is even lower. Sounds like you will go somewhere great anyway.

Just got waitlisted at Williams- I wish these colleges would just either accept or reject me. Oh, well, it does’t look like Duke, Amherst, Harvard, Brown, Yale, Columbia, or Dartmouth.
@dadstressed‌: Thanks for that data. That definitely clears up why Bates wouldn’t have accepted me. I had no idea that they accepted half of their class early decision.

@Cicero1,

All the schools you just named are, as you know, reaches for everyone. However, you appear to be a credible applicant for any of them. You’re not out of the running, yet. The more reaches to which you apply, the more rejections you’ll get. Both my sons were rejected at a number of schools. My National Merit Finalist, SAT 2340, eight 5s on AP exams, valedictorian, five National Latin Exam gold medal (including two Perfect Papers) older son was WAITLISTED at WUSTL. Between them, they chalked up a bunch of rejections (and acceptances - just like you). But in the end, they were both admitted to Harvard. Go figure.
