Hi everyone.
Is it true that highly-selective colleges don't like it if you haven't taken all APs offered at your school? I applied for AP Biology, but I didn't get admitted into the course :(.

My classmates are exceptionally smart, so only the people with the 20 highest marks get into AP Bio. I was stunned I didn't make it, because my mark was only slightly lower than a friend's (he got in). I plan on self-studying and taking the exam though. I've been accepted into the other AP at my school, but I'm worried that I will be put at a disadvantage, as my another friend (who got into both APs offered) is also applying ED to my school of interest.

Any idea if I'll be penalized, not because I didn't choose to take all APs, but because I didn't make it into the class?

Wow, you have to APPLY to get into AP courses? I guess it’d weed out all the people who are not prepared for AP courses and who have no idea what they’re getting into…but those people help improve my class rank. ^__^

It’s not black and white with colleges. They just want to see you challenge yourself, and no college expects you to take ALL the AP courses offered.

It’s not exactly something you can control here, so just… don’t get hung up about the things you don’t have control over.

Yeah, at my school people have to apply for AP courses by signing up for a placement/entrance exam, for other AP courses all you do is sign up and you’ll get in.

I think it’s really dumb, for example in the APUSH class in my school at least 3 people quit, I have a 4 in AP World but I didn’t get in, and one of my friends who has a 2 in AP World got into APUSH…

Can’t you fight with the counselors to get you into some of those classes? I had a counselor who was very reluctant to put me into some classes, but I just had to keep “fighting” for them.

Also, usually if you bring a parent in, that seals the deal and you’ll get the classes you want.

I think your counselor would have to add a note about that when you’re applying to colleges. I’ve never heard of a school that requires students to “apply” for an AP class.

Either way, I don’t think this will hurt you too much. When one door closes, another door opens. Hopefully you have other AP classes that you can take.

My school has recommendations; however, if you are denied admission into the class, you can sign a waiver form.

Normally, after a person takes Algebra 2/Trig Honors, he/she is given the choice of Precalc Honors or AP Stats. I happen to be in Algebra 2 regular and am the only one in my class who got *accepted/i into Precalc Honors… They rejected me from AP Stats, however.

I’ve already asked my parents to call my counselor, but he said that the class has already reached maximum capacity and they can’t create another class, because the only AP teacher doesn’t have room in his schedule.

Techhexium, maybe you could self-study APUSH Some of my friends self-studied from AMSCO and they all got fives!

Edit:
We have to apply for our classes, because too many people are interested in APs and we don’t have enough qualified teachers :(

My school has terrible application processes for getting into AP courses. Almost every single one has something to do. All the AP sciences you have to write an essay on why you want to take the classes, as well as fill out a sheet of all your math, science, english classes and grades. Englishes you take an exam, History you just have to have good grades, Psych you gotta have good Bio and History grades, Art History you must be an ‘art student’ which means you have to have taken like 8 art classes, same with Music Theory, exams for languages, ETC.

And you have to get approved by your current teacher. Anyway, I didn’t get into any of the englishes or histories since my teachers in each basically hated me. ■■■.

^ That sucks. We don’t have APs here, but if my school had the same process… shudders I know my English teacher thinks I’m ■■■■■■■■ (she has low standards for me too) and has major favorites.
