Today I got an e-mail from Fordham that I was rejected as a Fall 2012 Transfer Applicant.

I am so confused because I didn't think Fordham was all that selective...

I have a 3.85 gpa, 30 credits, 15 in progress now. PTK, Honors Club, President of 2 clubs. Communications manager for an up and coming NGO. A pretty damn good essay.

Sure my hs stuff was not good at all, but I honestly think it would make that much of a difference.

I also applied to NYU (dream school), Columbia, Barnard, GWU, and American.

Im thrown off by this, now I'm thinking I wont even get into NYU probably..

Where are you right now? That also seems to play a big role in transfer admissions. Also, if you are applying for soph standing, HS WILL make a difference.
That said, don’t take it too rough. Transfer admissions are unpredictable so you never know!

I am currently at my Community College. Right, I know HS will make a difference but I thought considering I had 30 credits, that would’ve counted for something. Colleges like to see an upward trend, I thought for sure they’d see some dedication. I took 3 classes in the summer, 6 in the fall and 2 in the winter.

Im paranoid because I have a feeling I’ll get rejected from NYU for sure now because I was rejected from Fordham.

@ipod360 - I’m so confused as to why…I didn’t know Fordham was all that selective.

I have no idea about Fordham specifically, but sometimes schools reject transfer applicants that may not have enough transferable credits or pre-req’s for their major. Especially those transferring as incoming Juniors.

That’s less common for 2nd year community college students, as often they’ll count an Associates as automatically meeting all Gen Ed.'s, but I have no idea what Fordham’s policy is.

If you applied with only 15 credits completed at a CC, your high school grades and scores would have remained the most important factor. Columbia, after one term at a CC with bad HS grades???

When you said “won’t even get into NYU” you make it sound as though you think NYU is easy to get into… which is not the case. The schools you’re talking about are highly selective. Also keep in mind that some schools have welcoming policies on transfers and others do not – look at how many transfers are admitted each year and what the percentages are.

Also keep in mind that 30 units is not a lot. Some schools take sophomore transfers, but the majority prefer junior transfers. Even then, people with 60+ units at 3.85 GPA often still get rejected from schools like NYU and Columbia. And if you don’t have a compelling reason as to why you did poorly in high school, right now schools are only seeing a very short period of time in which you’ve been doing well, so that may not convince them that it’s a level of performance that you can sustain for a longer period.

I got into NYU this year with a 3.81 college GPA with only 31 credits (counting current enrollment), so there’s a good chance you will too. I don’t really think I was that special, especially since I had an illness that resulted in me taking almost my entire senior year off.

olivia724 - I DEF did not mean it like that at all! I had always thought that Fordham was maybe the easier school to get into compared to NYU and the rest. To me I thought of it as “Wow Fordham rejected me, so NYU def will.”
I have a lot of family issues that led to me doing poor in high school and I went to 4 different high schools in a matter of 3 years.

Gregfields- Congrats! I saw your post on the Official NYU Transfer Thread. You’re lucky you found out early. I am so anxious about getting in or not. Lol maybe I’ll find out later because I have been rejected. I e-mailed admissions about some updated information last night and they got back to me today saying that the info had been added to my file. So I’m guessing that my app is still under review…? Even though its tech a week until we find out if we get in or not.
