REJECTED.. Should I appeal?!

So I was rejected from UCI.. Here are my stats:

UC-UC Transfer
Major: Biological Sciences
GPA: 3.53 UC
Pre-reqs: Missing 1 ochem class, will finish in the summer before transferring
GEs: Will be done by summer
ECs: Clubs, IM sports, high school tutoring jobs and volunteer work
Other: Failed 2 CC GE courses, retook and passed both.

UCI sent me a supplemental questionnaire and I discussed the death of my aunt and how I failed 2 courses at a local CC because of it. (Will they refer to this supplemental questionnaire when reading my appeal though?) In my appeal, I'll discuss how the circumstances of my aunt's declining health/death prevented me from doing well in school. I'll also say that after the death, my cumulative UC GPA rose (3.3 to 3.4 to 3.5) and how I made the dean's list for the two quarters after my aunt died. I also retook those two courses ON TOP of my UC courseload, and still got a 3.8 and 3.7 GPA for those two quarters.

I also obtained a job and a lab internship that I couldn't discuss in my application bc I started after the app was due. I am thinking of talking about how I was able to balance a job, a lab internship, two 20-unit quarters, and still get an upward trending GPA.

What do you guys think my chances are? UCI is my dream school and I definitely think I deserved to get in.. :( I'm sure chances are pretty slim, but do you think it's worth a shot?

I would appeal, but keep in mind that when writing you should no focus on the death of your Aunt, but how her death help you grow as a person in some way (did you learn something from this experience)? If you want me to read over your appeal just let me know (PM me before to make sure that I’m free to do so).

That’s a good idea @mike011x  I will discuss how her death did affect my grades, but how it also taught me that I need to be able to balance school even during hard times and how it made me a stronger person. I might take you up on that offer! I’ll PM you sometime to see if you’re available!

Go for it…it won’t hurt to try. The fact that you have a job and an internship position should definitely help your chances.

@fuzzyducky22 wanted to respond to you here so I don’t clog up the UCSD transfer page, but yeah. I think I’m going to appeal too. I think with what you’re going to present is new and compelling information and it sounds like it’ll definitely add to your app along with your current gpa as well! Let me know how your process goes! I’m also going to call Irvine tomorrow to see what is the main reason I got rejected and I’ll keep you posted. please share the info you get too! :open_mouth: We’re gonna get through this man!

Thanks @Farcen! I’ll definitely keep in touch! I hope we get in!!

Appeal @fuzzyducky22 I got into UCI with biological sciences, my GPA is lower than yours and I wont be attending this fall. So there’s a definite slot open for you!! You definitely deserve to be a student there and they need to recognize this! I don’t know if that 1 missing Ochem class affected your admissions decision because I’m currently taking the second semester’s Biology, Ochem, and Physics w/ Calc. I’m missing General Chemistry II though. (Not sure if any of that matters) But you’re driven and have had hard circumstances so I say APPEAL and get into your dream school!

Best of luck!

@WordofTeekz Thank you so much for your encouraging words! I will definitely try my best to write a good appeal! Good luck to wherever you are headed! :)
