Rejections: Class of 2007

Occaisionally schools will telephone to extend an invite. Usually this is done when schools are very excited to extend their hand to a prospective student. For the most part letters are the typical means of invitation.

This is one downside of frequenting CC, unfortunately. Hearing about others who have received their news, when you or your child hasn't. Makes a difficult waiting period even more stressful.

I have to say that it bothers me that Elon would tell an applicant who inquired about the phone calls, that none had been made, when we can see right here on CC that calls of acceptance have, indeed, been made this week. It isn't nice to mislead kids that way!

Yes, alwaysamom, there is apparently such thing as too much information. (Or, as the kids call it "TMI!") My heartfelt good wishes go out to everyone here who is still waiting.

OK get this one: I hear the mail truck, walk down to the box, open it and there is a large, thin'ish envelope from Elon! My heart begins to pound, I rush inside, text my D and ask if I can open it, YES she says!. I rip open the envelope. Inside is a letter that begins "Congradulations on your acceptance to Elon".....Oh... It's a letter from a "student" and goes on to describe all of the exciting volunteer opportunities at Elon. There is also a small and colorful publication with smiling preppy kids at a fundraising event. If this had come a month ago, I would have happily put it in the now very thick folder marked Elon, but at this point I wanted to throw it against the wall! AARGH!

That's it, I need to get my life back! Sarah IS going to be SOMEWHERE this fall and if it's not for MT, the world won't come to an end. I didn't get a degree in MT degree, but I've managed to enjoy directing, teaching and performing in community theatre for many years!
Only 1-30 more days to wait, we'll get it done.

Kate

P.S. I wish that I would have come up with a more creative screen name for myself. I am proud to be the mother of Sarah, but I am many other things as well. (Just saying that makes me feel so much better!)

OMG Sarahsmom (KATE!) the drama here has me hanging by a thread! It was kind of funny reading your post because it reminded me that the same thing happened to us last year. You would hope schools could be a little more selective with their mailings during this very delicate time of year! You are right in knowing that your daughter WILL get in somewhere, and will make the most of whatever is offered in the way of theatre. It will be OK even if it is not a BFA program. Hang in there mom, you'll get through this too. I know you've been through a lot these last months, but you will be able to relax about colleges, at least, soon enough. Best wishes to you and all the others still waiting. I'm on the edge of my seat about how it all will turn out!

PS About the Elon calling thing...is it possible that Gen Ed admissions is not aware what MTE admissions did? I think that is more likely than them telling an outright lie about some applicants being called. BTW, my daughter did not get a call last year, just a thin envelope that she was off the waiting list!

oh Sarahsmom - what a letdown...and I totally agree with Melsmom - why cant they just ease up on the mail thing? I think the problem is that for the majority of schools, in any other discipline without an audition, by this stage, most of the kids still on their admissions list are likely to be coming or making that final decision. Most of our friends with HS students NOT in a performance area, are deciding between 2 schools or they have decided.....it's frustrating but as evreyone says, it'll be over soon and each of our little birds will be flying the nest somewhere for something.....

Hi Gals,

You're the best! It's good to laugh about it.

Kate

Sarahsmom (kate), we're ALL pulling for ya!

Sarahsmom/Kate, what a story! I'm so glad that at least it was a "neutral" piece of information. We had a similar mail moment today - My D received a large, thick envelope from Penn State, but it in her case, it was a rejection! (PSU invites students to apply for other majors.) She didn't have a good feeling about that audition, but it's still a letdown.
After all you've been through this year, I'm especially hoping for you and your daughter! So glad you're keeping your sense of humor - keep us informed!

Oh Sarahsmom(Kate), I completely understand what you're going through. I ran to the mailbox today and it was two more letters from schools that I wasn't at but was academically accepted to (even though I let them know that I'm not attending)!

And about the Elon calling thing. I called the MT Department and asked them specifically so either there's bad communication or they just don't want to tell us the truth (which I don't think would happen)

Best of luck to everyone! :)

mizlyn the same thing happened to me with penn state, I was so excited when I saw the envelope, (I didn't have a good audition there either, and I didn't really want to go there) but still the big envelope is such a let down when thinking it's a acceptance letter!

Sarahsmom, I've been quietly following this thread, and have had my fingers crossed the whole time (hard to do when typeing) when I started reading your post tears came to my eyes, then, to find out it wasnt the Mt acceptance you've been waiting for, well, I can't describe how I felt! You and everyone on this thread have impressed me with the humor and grace you've shown during this crazy time. Sendiong good thoughts and keeping fingers crossed.

it seems there's a little group of us who are here this afternoon, because i see so many new posts within minutes..
oh, how i love not going to school and having today off of work!! :)
i hope to get something from syracuse soon....maybe a few days though......waiting waiting waiting...sheesh!!!

Hey, Sarahsmom (Kate)....I am also a "Sarah's mom" (she is in her second year at Barnard). I have been checking in here regularly and I was so excited to see your post...till I read what happened. Now, I want to send a nasty e-mail to Elon or something. That's just plain MEAN to send a BIG envelope this time of year! ARGHH!!!

**here's hoping that your frustration is somehow seeping over to me via all these little electrons (???)* maybe it will help somehow! Count me among those cheering all you moms on as your kids (and you) go through this time...

Adding to Elon comments - like Melsmom, last year when my son was accepted in Dec., I remember that news coming by snail mail and not by way of a phone call. To the best of my recollection, no phone call came at that time. I recall that he got his letters of invitation into MT at OCU and Elon in the same week in early Dec., 2005.

Also, I think the head of MT at Elon may be out of town right now, and it is possible that the person in the MT office did not know she had made phone calls. I just don't know that phone calls were the norm in the past (maybe it has changed).

Good luck to all! Surely snail mail will reach everyone from Elon's MT dept. in the near future, no matter if good or bad news - at least you will know.

Hello all, Elon rejection letter came today, they did offer her a BA in theatre...but musical theatre is her love...Sarahsmom,does your daughter have a safety school?I am wondering if we need to go on a search for other schools,non-audition or other...I don't know...i feel lost......

i know of a nice school in Florida, which wouldn't be too far from tennessee...its palm beach atlantic university in w. palm beach fl....i almost went there when i was a senior....they have a BA in Musical Theatre, it is audition-based, but would probably be a good shot for your daughter. GORGEOUS campus, i will say!!

Oh mum2four I'm so sorry! I'm expecting one of those in the mail soon, seeing as how I didn't get a phone call. Did your daughter have a good audition there? If so then that's all she can hope for. I know it's hard. Something will come her way and yes everything does happen for a reason, Oh goodness I'm tired of saying/hearing that.
Where else did she audition at?

Best wishes!

Hi!
I just want to say that what happened today was not at all intentional on the part of the wonderful folks at Elon. I'm sure that these promotional materials come from different departments and they have no idea that we're anxiously waiting to hear from MT. It's only that Sarah loves Elon so much that we are so sad that she didn't get a call. We won't know anything for sure until the mail comes, maybe she'll be on a waitlist. Not everyone they make offers to will accept, so hopefully there IS hope.
mum2four I am so sorry for you and your D. My D did not apply to any non-audition schools. We were naive and listened to teachers and professionals who assured us that many acceptances would be coming her way. She may go back to Elon to audition for straight acting, but I want to talk to to the department head first. More waiting.

Kate

Wichita State University
I believe WSU is still taking apps...they offer a BFA in MT; auditions for scholarship only. They have an audition date set for March 16. My D auditioned there last March and we were impressed with the campus and facilities. You might want to check them out....www.wichita.edu

Good Luck.
