religion in essays

Would it be wise for someone to write about their religion (or lack thereof) for a college essay? or is this something to stay away from since it could potentially "alienate" the person reviewing the essay.

if it reveals something about your nature...

on face, it seems difficult to concieve how professing one's religious devotion/lack of devotion would help you stand out or help colleges understand your greatest strengths.

A friend wrote about her religion, what it meant to her, and how it shaped who she is, and was accepted everywhere she applied.

Personally, I would stay away from it. You never know what are the views of a person who is going to read your esssay are on that subject.

Generally, it is not a good idea.

There is a reason why people say not to talk about "sex, religion and politics". Those are three areas that many people feel very strongly about and have a hard time being objective. You take a huge risk by chosing one of those as your topic - there are few ways to alienate someone faster.

The only time I would say that it might be ok, would be if you are Christian and are applying to a Christian college . Otherwise, my advice would be to choose something else.

thanks, i had a feeling it wouldn't be a good idea. I just thought it would be an easy essay to write for me since it's something I feel strongly about... Back to the drawing board i guess.

Write about what's important to you. The essay is supposed to show something about yourself to the admissions officer; I think if religion is that important to you, the admissions officer would want to see it. BTW, I wrote about religion in one of my shorter essays and got into every school I applied to (though I think I would've even if I wrote about something else).

I guess no essay is reviewed objectively, anyway. So if religion is something that really means a lot to you and won't offend anyone you could very well writ aobut it.

Religion and Politics are pretty much the only things I would stay away from in essays.

as long as you don't advocate your religion, you'll be fine. i've heard of numerous people writing about their passion for their religion, and more importantly HOW it exactly impacted/shaped their life, and what it means to them, and they got into fine schools (Yale, MIT, Wellesley, Williams, Princeton etc.)

There are many people for whom even a very non-agressive mention of the religion will give a negative aftertaste. Believe me, I am talking from experience.

Definitely write about it if it's important to you. I wrote about Jesus and Gay Marriage (Religion + Politic+ Sex, so much for the Taboo Three) and got in to my top choice. Hey if a Taliban member who kill for his religious ideology could get into Yale, so too could you my friend.
