I put down a deposit at UT-Austin, and I have every intention of going there, UNLESS I get into Harvard or somewhere comparable...
If I DO decide to change my mind and go somewhere else, how would I do that, and do you guys think it is a good idea?

It is done all the time; before May 1st!!

Its what is done when students get off a waitlist, so you can do it any time you want. What you can’t do is put down 2 deposits and figure you’ll pick a school later.

It’s done all the time. Nothing unethical about it. Good luck.

If I pull out, will I get my deposit back?

Usually not. It’s your fee to hold a place for you. If you decide to turn it down later for any reason, that’s the cost you incur.

Like others said, this is very typical and all the colleges understand that and won’t hold it against you unless it’s something like mikemac said: purposely double depositing b/c you can’t make up your mind. That’s just plain wrong.
