Renters and Liability Insurance

So does anyone living in the dorms at UT Austin buy renters and/or liability insurance; is it even worth it?
If you do, is there a certain company you recommend? How much coverage do you buy and how much is the deductible & premium.

Check with your parents’ home owners insurance company. You may already be covered under the home owner’s policy.

For coverage of personal belongings, see this thread (and you can search the archives of the Parents forum for others through the years) – there are two insurers that are repeatedly recommended here. I posted about our positive claim experience with one of them.

A college student living in a dorm doesn’t generally have the type of risk exposure that requires liability coverage; but certainly check to see what coverage extends to you from your parents’ homeowners, and if none, and you DO think you engage in some high-risk activity requiring liability coverage, then get a renters policy (and of course, skip the personal property policies discussed above).

@m1817 Well with home owner’s insurance I heard the deductible is extremely high compared to what you can get with renters insurance :o

@TXArtemis Thank you for the information.
I looked over the thread you linked and it seems like CSI is the way to go.
And I will also be sure to ask my parents about the liability.
