I am now facing a dilemma whether or not I should repeat my junior year. I'm an international student who came to the US in Sophomore year. I feel pretty unsatisfied with my grades even though they look fine. I'm considering about changing to a new school and take more classes to improve myself. I also think that I'm totally not ready for the SAT. Another reason is I feel like school life in my current school is quite boring. There isn't much clubs to join. I hope to find a school which I can engage myself more and won't leave regrets as I already came here to study.

I need help figuring out whether repeating affects my college applications and will it be a really bad action to take?

Repeating a grade is a serious choice with serious consequences. I’m not telling you what to do, but in my honest opinion, it’s definitely not worth it.

If you aren’t quite satisfied with your grades, then work harder to bring them up this semester - the old grades will still show up on your transcript, and the fact that you spent two years in 11th grade will be a cause for concern rather than a plus. Take an SAT preparation course if you feel unprepared - and, heck, there’s nothing stopping you from taking it two or three times, even at the beginning of senior year.

I’m sorry if this sounds rude, but repeating a grade because of social life just seems rather silly to me. If you’re serious about attending another school, then attempt to switch, but don’t think that you need to completely start over. If that doesn’t work out, try finding some extracurriculars outside of school or start your own club in something you’re interested in.

Plainly stated, I think you’ll definitely regret it.

I’ve heard that you should only repeat a class if you got a D or F in one, at least that’s what I heard when applying to UCs. Or else like the poster above me said, it’s not worth it because it looks bad to repeat a grade. At least it’s better that colleges will see improvement in the next semester/grade if you do better next time. Perhaps in the additional comments on the college apps you can maybe explain why you received certain grades you didn’t like.

But the classes that I’m taking seems really easy compared to the other juniors. I’m also not a very outstanding student. What will be my chance of getting into a good university and should I transfer as a PG if my grades still remains to be bad?
