I've been sick since the beginning of college with mono, strep throat, and then the flu at one point. Because of this, I've missed some class because I've been too sick or too weak to leave my bed. I feel horrible about this and just want to get off to a good start in college. One of my biggest issues though is that two of the days I've missed have been days assignments are due. They were just small papers that only account for a fraction of our grade, but I'm worried because I really want to do well my first semester of college. The first time it happened I emailed the teacher and took care of it. Now this is the second time a paper is due, and I missed again. It seems like I'm just trying to get more time to do it or something. I was really sick this morning and don't know what to do. I should be able to get a doctors excuse from the med center, but I don't want my teacher to hate me. Should I email her and what should I say?

If you are too sick to work, you are too sick to work. Email your professor. They may get annoyed; you’ll just have to show them that you are a serious student when you get back. If your professors give you a hard time, talk to your dean. At my undergrad college, deans corresponded with professors on a student’s behalf quite frequently. (In fact, we were encouraged to notify our deans when we were out sick for more than one week.)
