Repeating 9th grade?

My sister has always been young for her class, being born in early September. It's catching up to her... she finished her 9th grade with about a 1.5 GPA.

My Mom wants to hold her back a grade, and have her re-do her freshman year. It seems the district is being uncooperative, and school is just about ready to start.

Do you have any similar experiences/anecdotes to share? Is this an impossible task to ask our school district? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Why is your district being uncooperative?

We’d like to know the same thing. Apparently, people never repeat around here.

Is it better to move on towards 10th grade, with a 9th grade GPA of 1.5, or re-do 9th grade from scratch? I know that colleges look down on kids who repeat grades. What do you guys think?

I think the former is a better option if she can improve her grades. She can still graduate with a GPA of at least 3.0. Or If she repeats the grade, she can go back and learn what she missed and actually be prepared for 10th grade. But the question really is does she have the determination to do better in school. If she doesn’t, then it won’t matter if she repeats the grade or not because she won’t be interested in learning the material, and it would actually be better for her to move on with high school so she can graduate faster. Ask her what she wants.

She definitely has the determination to do better in school. And as you said, we’re also worried that because of her poor 9th grade, she will be behind in her 10th grade classes…
