Repeating Grade

Hi college confidential, I know this might be a weird thing to ask and tell because some of you guys think a 3.8 is a low gpa but anyways heres my story. Thank you in advance!

I am a current highschool junior and im going to repeat this year. I was having a lot of problems outside of school which really affected my grades. Its kind of weird to explain. Basically, my parents divorced which really affected me. They live together which makes it awkward becuase they want to have an influence on my siblings. They only told me what happened because im the oldest but i wish they hadnt. Ive been really depressed and i didnt really like coming home to all the arguments but the past year has been really hard. I dont do drugs but sports are my natural high and is the only place i forget about my problems. I havent talked to anyone about this except the school counselor and they said i had to repeat a grade to graduate. My gpa for sophmore year was a 3.0 and this year i am failing most of my classes. My question is if i get good grades next year will i be able to go to college because i am getting help rn from the counselor and will seek medical help.

Absolutely. Retake those classes. The new grades will replace the old ones.
Some colleges like the UC’s will mind but plenty will look at your repaired grades. Focus on doing well next year.

Your parents divorced but none of your siblings know? If that’s true, your parents are being extremely unfair to you. You should have a frank talk with them to tell them how you feel and explain the effect it’s had on you (depression, failing classes, being forced to repeat a year of high school). If they haven’t told your siblings they’re divorced yet, I’d insist that they do. That’s an enormous responsibility to lay on a child. You may need counseling to deal with the depression. I’m so sorry you’re in this situation. Retake those classes and focus on getting good grades.

I’m glad to say my condition has become better but i was wondering if I do better next year do my grades average out from 10-11 or will my second attempt of 11th grade be weighted with 10th grade and how will colleges view my application?

sorry for responding so late

It depends on the school. Typically, the new grades “replace” the old ones, so that the old ones appear on the transcript but aren’t counted in the GPA. Then, the Guidance Counselor (to whom you’ll have to speak after your D’s and F’s turn into A’s and B’s, or s/he’ll wonder what’s going on!) will write about that “off” year in their recommendation. You’ll be better off at holistic colleges - see if your public library has Colleges that change lives.

What do you mean holistic colleges? Do you mean like a holistic college admission process?

Yes, It was shorthand for ‘colleges with a holistic admission process, rather than processing thousands of applicants through a GPA x sat score system.’ sorry.

Thanks
