What types of awards/contest scores should we assume that Harvard adcoms are aware of? If one is reporting awards like USAMO Qualifier, USABO Semifinalist, ARML, etc. and scores like AMC/AIME scores, is it safe to assume that Harvard admissions officers will know what these awards/scores mean right of the bat? Or would it be of some value to explain what these things are in the additional information section? Thanks a lot, I really appreciate the help!

Well, as long as there is sufficient space, go into as much detail as you can and make it sound as good as you can. Knowledge creates an impression of authenticity, and will make the admissions officers that much more likely to exaggerate the extent of your achievements, whether they should or not.

They know what USABO, AIME and others are.

Thanks for the prompt responses, guys. At this point, I’m hearing fairly conflicting advice. Technically, I could describe some of these awards/competitions in the “Additional Information” section of the Common App, but I already have about 3 pages worth of significant information in that section of my application. At what point would adcoms begin to get annoyed about additional information?

Thanks again!

My response seems to have unintentionally clashed with chester’s. He is correct in that admissions officers know of many achievements. I was referring to the more obscure awards etc., which could be elaborated upon to improve your case.

Adcoms will be aware of the awards you mentioned. Only less well-known awards should be elaborated on, which can be done by explaining the number of winners in relation to the number of applicants.
