An0nym0u5, since you applied to Columbia SEAS, I'm assuming you also applied to Cornell Engineering. If this is so, Cornell Engineering is harder to get into (if you look at average stats) than Columbia; getting a likely from Columbia SEAS definitely does not mean you will get a likely from Cornell. Also, different schools are looking for different qualities in an applicant; you may have a "hook" that Columbia desires that Cornell doesn't care about. Don't count on getting a likely based on the fact that you got one from another comparable school.

It is my personal belief that no one should ever be so arrogant as to expect a likely letter, no matter how fabulous you think you are.

i just wanted anyone's opinion on whether most admitted urm's get likely letters? or can u still get admitted as a urm without getting one?

from what i know colleges tend to send out likely letters to athletes and top students as well as urms. from several posts that i've seen you can expect ivy league scools to send out these letters to between 5 and 25% of the admitted applicants, but there's still much speculation over how many cornell's giving out.

i apologize for that post. it was probably my second snobbiest post ever. it was more a result of my personal preference of colleges, (i.e. not feeling that cornell is the right environment for me). so cornell2009 sorry for the offense. in fact, my best friend is going to cornell (via ED).

do we know an official number for how many likely letters were sent?

nope...if you want you can call or email the admissions office. i asked "uncle ezra" (something like ezra.cornell.edu) but never got a reply.

I got a letter from Cornell Admissions & Enrollment Office back in Jan. Never saw it as a "likely," except that the "enrollment" part was weird. Can't find it for my life now, or I'd post it. It had some contact info attached, and praises of Cornell. GL everybody!!
