As a very devout and fundamental Catholic, both Abortion and Euthenasia are very important issues to me. I am obviously against the practice of both, and those two issues alone force me to register as a republican. Though I am conservative pretty much in all other aspects.

Just a few suggestions for your paper, some of other important issues are gay marriage and the Family Protection Act that Bush pushed, immigration, social security, and capital punishment. Good luck on your paper.

thanks for the ideas. i thought about doing immigration, but at least two other people already have projects underway on it. i'll keep the others in mind for other papers.

If so, can we then say that "the smart ones know Bush is not where it's at"?

My experience with the brilliant, intellectually honest, and fair-minded conservatives I knew at Harvard Law is that there is a huge gulf between being a conservative and thinking that W is where it's at. Members of the first group are numerous among my classmates; members of the second are few and far between.

Libertarian. I am far left socially, and a little to the left economically.

I find many Republicans to be intelligent, reasonable people, but I find that Bush supporters are uninformed (basically ignorant) and impossible to talk to. Then again, Bush really isn't a conservative.

Of course, I would love to hear someone attempt to support the war in Iraq.

EDIT-As an aside, I know this girl in my school who is a feminist against gay marriage. Amazing.

I don't want this thread to get pulled for getting too political, but I have to say this: Bush supporters aren't the uninformed ones. I could give you a great argument for Iraq. In fact, my father, a Colonel in the Marines, just got back from Baghdad, and he knows a hell of a lot more than the average American who makes their judgment on the war based on the ultra-liberal media coverage. No-one sees what is ACTUALLY going on there, and the good that is being done. It's not that I support war ("the soldier, above all people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war" - General MacArthur); I just support our cause and I understand why what we are doing is necessary. Yes, I am a Republican, but I support Bush because I believe in what he's doing, even when it isn't the "popular" thing to do. We have a job to finish, and we can't leave until we do. Believe me, I could go quite in depth with this...but I've found that those who disagree with me are useless to argue against, because they don't even listen and in essence become the ignorant ones.

I agree with Mystic. Sure leaving now is disaster, but this guy got us into this mess. Its a crime how much the stock portfolios of his cabinet members have climbed. Haliburton was a $6 stock in 2000, now its $80. Meanwhile we are killing not only our own troops but also thousands of innocent Iraquies are dying in the middle of the fire. Saddam was a puppet in our hands. Instead we went in with greed and forcing our values on others and we are all paying the price.

That said, most Ivy students who are conservative are the libertarian type. Very few Bush lovers.

We seem to forget that over 2,000 Americans have perished, as well as thousands of Iraqis. We wonder why people in that country hate us. It is also evident that we are completely oblivious to the fact that other countries have different customs and cultures, and that not everyone wants democracy and capitalism-and they certainly don't want to be occupied.

*It should be noted that a non-trivial number of the "Very conservative" Facebook entries belong to people who are fictional, dead, or obviously joking. Examples of some "very conservative" Harvard affiliates: Xerxes the Great, a lesbian women's studies concentrator, Spanky the Frog.

NickZhao, like you, I hate Bush. but you should read sarah vowell's "Assassination Vacation." she makes quite a good argument in there about how she hates Bush, but is deathly afraid that bodily harm will come to him, because she wouldn't be able to stand seeing that man become a martyr. and after i read it, i'm inclined to agree. Live Bush is bad, but dead Bush as a saint/martyr is even worse.

and how the f*** did Bush get into Yale with a 567 verbal SAT and no extracurriculars? yeah, also read "The Chosen." then again, 567 explains quite a bit...

chopsticks:
1) It was ALOT easier back then. If you ask HYP graduates whether or not they could get in today, most would say no.
2) Daddy with hundreds pouring out of his pockets. 'Nuff said.

yes, Bush is definitely not my favorite person. i almost cried when he was reelected in 2004. but the fact that i live in seattle explains a lot if you think about it.

but i strongly disagree with the word "mindless." i have many logical reasons for disliking bush and his administration.
