wait, so do we have to send in mid-year reports by the counselor even if we were able to manually send it online????

I did both. It looks good.

nvm sorry didn't read the thread

I got a letter in the mail today requesting mid years - I'm freaking out. I'm pretty sure it's not random, that just doesn't make sense, it would be unfair to those that got picked and have their decisions affected because of those grades. I bet it's the borderline students that get the request...

Well from personal experience, when i was a senior last yr, i recieved a mid-yr grades request. Unfortunately, i was rejected :( I am nearly certain they request grades from students who are on the borderline of getting accepted/rejected. A mid-yr report gives them more evidence that your grades are consistent and what kinds of grades you are getting in higher level classes. Im positive if you were a perfect applicant, you wouldnt receive one. There is no way in hell they would randomly distribute requests. That is pointless and unpractical. BTW, here were my stats last yr when i applied:

1220 SAT :/
4.53 weighted gpa, 3.95 weighted (something like that)
7/4xx class rank
Great ECs and leadership
Extensive work experience
A crappy essay that i slopped together (which i REGRET SO MUCH)
Pretty good recs

Im applying to transfer as a soph., so hopefully this time around things will be different. I raised my SAT to a 1270 (crap still) and im in the honors program here at UNLV, so i think my chances are fairly good this time. I also have a stellar essay this time around which i meticulously edited like a thousand times. Last yr, USC was just a throw in and i didnt take the app seriosuly.

But after researching the school and visiting it in person, i was blown away. It truly is an excellent school. The sense of school pride there is unbelievable and very alluring. Good luck to you all

My stats are about the same as yours last year only a 28 ACT (1280 SAT equiv.) and I received a request yesterday for mid-term grades. How were your mid-terms grades that you submitted?? I hoping I have a chance since my mid term grades were all A's in tough classes. I was relieved to get a request since that means they haven't thrown me in the reject pile yet.

i think there is a differnece from receiving midyear or not, its not random
people at my school who got Mid year requests had lesser scores/ec's than the ones who didn't
AlbyWalby i think ur going to go to UCI w/ those stats

If you dont get a mid year grade report but you are on the borderline to begin with, does that mean you probably wont get in?

Borderline applicants emcompass a large number of students. Students who stats slightly below or at the average are given mid yr reports. If you get one, you still have a chance. It is the admissions way of giving a nudge which direction they should take.

Anyways, to answer someone's question, when i sent my mid-yr report, i got all A's: 3 AP, 3 honors classes.

Dont be discouraged though, i know one of my friends who used to go to school with me who was one rank higher than me and had a 1220 got into usc. She also got a a mid-yr request.

Does anyone know how USC views grades? I mean, I'm scared because I have B's in tough AP classes - surely they will take into account the difficulty of the courses? It seems that everyone that applies or gets accepted has insanely high GPAs, I only have a 3.8, ranked 28/434. But it seems like my SAT score is in the range - 1370.

I wouldn't go and do any "seem"-ing with USC. That school gets more academically competitive each year...and their average is something around 1400s...w/average GPA of 4.0. Not to worry you or anything, but being an avid college guide reader in my early high school days, they say that unless you have some "distinctive" characteristic, ie: minority, star athlete, ect., you have only a slight chance of accpetance if you are below the schools pronounced "averages." So, be prepared for that, but always keep the faith!

PerfectFourth, I definitely think they consider the difficulty of your courses. I have a 3.57 unweighted (4.42 weighted) and pretty good SATs and ECs, and I got an acceptance letter in Feb. My school is known for being very challenging academically, and I was taking rather hard classes, so I guess USC took that into account when my application was reviewed. Hope that relieves your worry a bit.

Edit: I just read the previous post, and I can't think of a particular hook I have (I guess my major is sort of unusual, actually, but whatever). USC must look at weighted averages or something, because my GPA is well below 4.0 unweighted.

A major can definitely be a hook at USC because they are trying to develope certain programs into the best in the country....

My major is BME...and that is probably why I was accepted in Feb...

Well i applied as a Bio major to USC which im positive is not an impacted major there. I dunno....the admissions process in general is just too complex to make accurate generalizations. The process just seems erratic. BTW, if you have a 1300+, you should be fine in terms of standardized tests.

Back in November, when i went to tour USC, i had the chance to talk one on one to the asst. director of admissions, and he reviewed my stats and told me I should have no problem getting in. But i had virtually the same stats as I did when i applied last year!!! I dont get it. Then again, I am applying as a transfer and the ratio of acceptances:applicants is marginally higher- like 33% compared to the freshman admissions rate of like 30%.

can those of you who received mid year report requests post stats?

I have 3.898 uw, 1250 SAT, 28ACT, 4.0 fall semester with all IB classes, except for two band classes. Eagle scout. Loads of EC

SAT 1460
cumulative GPA 3.6W, this semester 4.5W [Jr year 3 APs, Sr year 4 APs]
athlete and 2 major E.C.s

[edit] i got my letter asking for midyear grades on March 3.

nirvana - What is ur gpa uw

bozenuts05 - for soph and jr year its about 3.3, but for sr year 1st semster it is 3.5

hey guys whats up. I got into USC last week...I never got htis in the mail, but my friend who did get it told me about it, and I just entered them online because I thought we were all supposed to.

i got a 1530 sat and like a 4.25 GPA...

honestly guys I wouldn't sweat it, from reading over these boards most of you guys seem like very capable and competent young adults and i'm sure USC will see that in you.
