Background: I have a 4.0 GPA at my current community college, oakton community college, in Illinois. I have over 60 credit hours, although I am lacking a required college math course. I will complete this course, business calculus this upcoming fall semester, in turn, i will have completed my associates degree. The colleges I wanted to apply to as a transfer are NYU and Baruch college in New York. I'm not completely sure about my chances of getting in but I believe I have a good shot.

Question: Under the admissions review process it states "Applicants to our four-year colleges must have completed at least one college-level course in mathematics and English with a grade of C or better or must demonstrate college-level readiness based on SAT, ACT or New York Regents test scores."

I have no doubt I will get a A in the course, but I would like to transfer for the Spring 2013 semester and the application deadline is September 15th, right around the time the course begins. So, I will not have completed the course until the end of the Fall semester.

Now, is it possible to still apply and get accepted contingent upon the results of my course, will I get wait listed, will I get an incomplete and not be able to apply for another whole year due to one course? If anybody has had any experience with this situation or has any information it would be great as I plan to move to New York in September. Thank you!

I haven’t read the websites for these colleges, do they state whether all required course must be completed when applying or when matriculating? If not, then give them a call and ask if they will admit you contingent on completing the course, or if your application will be invalid if you don’t have all courses when applying. I would say to also ask your CC advisor, but they may not be familiar with the details of these schools since they’re not in IL and have likely not dealt with them much.

Colleges usually talk about coursework up to the time you matriculate, they assume you will complete the courses that you list are in progress. But there are always exceptions and I haven’t dealt with required courses before, so I don’t want to steer you in the wrong direction.

If the school websites are vague, calling them will give you a definitive answer.

Verbatim the application states: “Applicants to our four-year colleges must have completed at least one college-level course in mathematics and English with a grade of C or better or must demonstrate college-level readiness based on SAT, ACT or New York Regents test scores.”

I will have completed college algebra before the end of the deadline for applications on September 15th, but according to IAI (Illinois Articulation Initiative), I do not believe this counts as a “college level course”. Again this is according to the IAI, and not specifically NYU or Baruch college guidelines. I did call and they were rather unknowing when I called admissions, I did not ask if college algebra qualified as a college level course for mathematics, which I intend to do.

Thank you for the response. I will be looking more into this, I just wanted any input from others who may have had a similar situation.
