Required Summer Reading

The books I have to read are
Huck Finn
Catch 22
The Once and Future King

History:
-First chapter of textbook
-1984

English:
-All Quiet on the Western Front

That’s all! I’m so happy…

AP English Lit:
Oedipus Rex <– I flipped through the first few pages… does not look fun.
Mythology

Wuthering Heights and some short stories for AP Eng Lit

BrightRed: I’ve read Oedipus Rex…I thought the same thing before I read it, but the book was actually quite good. The topic of the book is very controversial which is probably why I liked it.

No official summer reading. Unofficially:
Start reading 3 awful books (“of your choice”) that I have to write three awful long papers about first semester.

And to the person who has to pick one out of five (i know this was a while back, but i figured it wouldnt hurt to comment)–
NEVER LET ME GO is really really good. I enjoyed it a lot. On the other hand, I hated the Dog in the Nightime. If you like stream of conciousness stuff its kinda like that.

I wrote my Dartmouth essay on The Namesake. It was such a great book, and right now I’m reading Interpretor of Maladies (which is Lahiri’s first book). She’s an awesome writer.

The book was better than the movie though (the movie has Kal Penn of Harold and Kumar fame. He’s actually good in the movie though, I was surprised.)

My college requires all freshmen to read “They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys from Sudan”

Typically I resent being made to read books (even though I absolutely love books in general). However, this book seems really good so I have no qualms about it

Agreed on Lahiri. I’ve read Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake.

I have to read Pride and Prejudice

We have to read Atonement and Crime and Punishment for AP English language along with doing some sort of poetry assignment.

"History:
-First chapter of textbook
-1984

English:
-All Quiet on the Western Front

That’s all! I’m so happy…"

I wish that was mine. Both those books are very good!

Profiles in Courage
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (by freddy d, of course)
a bunch of Gabriel Garcia Marquez short stories (in spanish, which will be death)
The Great Gatsby
The Scarlett Letter

^
Profiles in Courage is the book written by JFK, right? I’ve heard that’s a really good book.

I have to read:

Forty Studies that Changed Psychology: Explorations into the History of Psychological Research By Roger Hock

Life of Pi, by Yann Martel

Into the Wild - by Jon Krakauer

I read the life of Pi a long time ago, and the other two sound interesting.

Brave New World—Aldous Huxley
In Cold Blood—Truman Capote

How are these? Long and boring, short and boring, or interesting?

The Alchemist - Paulo Coehlo
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hooseini

All School Summer Reading

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

A.P. English

The Mayor of Casterbridge - Thomas Hardy

How To Read Literature Like a Professor - Thomas C. Foster

Mythology - Greek Titans and Olympians, Hercules, Jason and Medea, Icarus and Daedalus, Prometheus, and The Trojan War stories.

The Bible - Genesis, Exodus, stories of Job, Jonah, Jezebel, Lot’s wife, Sodom and Gomorrah, Martha and Mary. Book of Matthew ch. 21-28

And I have to take notes on all of that. A.P. English is going to suck.

We have to read either McCain’s memoir or Obama’s memoir…shoot me now…

Plus whatever AP reading comes up before school ends…

At my school we only have summer reading in the form of summer assignments for AP classes. It’s not usually too bad, but I just found out I have to read The Hot Zone for AP Bio! I’m like germ phobic, so words cannot desrcribe how much I do not want to read that book. When I first heard about it, back in like 5th grade, I said to myself, “I’m going to do myself a favor and promise never to read that book in my life.” And now I have to. I am so not happy. And this is the first year he’s even given a summer assingment. I’m going to try and talk to him about it, and see if there is any way I can read a different book.

Other than that I just have to read:

Canterbury Tales -AP English Lit.
Hardball - AP Gov.
