Required to give me full amount of Pell Grant?

I now have an EFC of 0 (previously 1507, but changed through an appeal after a loss of income via layoff). Per the updated SAR, I'm eligible for a Pell grant up to 5350 for the 2009-2010 school year. I received 950 for the fall semester from my community college, but my transfer institution has only calculated 2675 for the spring (and yes, they have this new EFC information). Are they not required to give me the remaining 1725 to meet that total of 5350? I've posed the same question to my FA advisor but haven't heard back yet and was hoping for some guidance or what to expect with his response.

No. The Pell is distributed on a semester basis (or whatever a school’s period is - I know quarters periods are different). You cannot get more Pell than the max for the semester which is half the annual pell, $2675 for a 0 EFC.

Well that stinks. lol I’d never heard that before, but I guess it makes sense. Bummer, that 1725 will have to come from loans, I was just trying to avoid that. Thanks for the info!

Have you talked to the FA office at your current CC to see if you can get the balance from them for this semester if they are willing to do an adjustment? To be honest I am not sure how or if that would work or if it is even possible. Might be worth asking though. The worst they can say is no.

Doubtful, I was only part time this semester and will be full-time in the Spring, so even if they adjusted my EFC it wouldn’t make too much of a dent in that 1725. I might shoot them an email, though, thanks for the idea.

Yes…and if you are part time, I believe the Pell is prorated. Perhaps folks with more experience with the Pell can comment. I don’t believe part timers get the full Pell.

Right thumper, that was my point. That 950 was based on part time, I would have actually had more with my new EFC but not much, and definitely not 2675.

Yes it is prorated. Full time, 3/4 time, half time, less than half time. The prorating is roughly an exact proration. Always worth a try. Every little helps.

We are in somewhat the same situation. Did a letter of special circumstances for spring semester and just spoke to dir. of FA. She’s recalculating for Pell and ACG…BUT I asked about this last summer and got a NO.

This is a new director, so perhaps the instit. formula has been adjusted. Do we request an adjustment for fall semester as well? Our student was ACG and Pell eligible in 2008-09. (Let me know if I should begin a new thread.)

Thank you.

My understanding is that sometimes a FAO will not do a special circumstances adjustment until the special circumstance is more ongoing. For instance if it is a job loss then often a FOA will not make a change until the job loss has been ongoing for a while. All special circumstances adjustments are at the discretion of the FA officer at the school. If it is a new person in charge perhaps it would be worth asking if the adjustment could be retroactive for the fall. I don’t know if this is allowed, but try asking. (I am assuming you meant you asked last summer regarding this school year).

Yes, this is exactly the case:

And you understood my rushed post correctly. I asked about the Pell and ACG in June 2009 re: Fall 2009.
