I am looking at the web page https://catalog.colorado.edu/undergraduate/admissions/minimum-academic-preparation-standards/ and see the following requirements in Natural Sciences section for the College of Engineering:
Natural science: 3 (includes 2 of physics AND 1 of chemistry or biology; OR 2 of chemistry AND 1 of physics or biology; OR 2 of biology AND 1 of chemistry or physics; OR 1 of physics AND 1 of chemistry or biology AND 1 of another science)
I am wondering if the list of: (1) “Physics 1 Honors,” (2) “Chemistry 1 Honors,” (3) “Biology 1 Honors,” and (4) “AP Computer Science A” are going to make the cut here.
The kids has SAT of 1430; AP Calculus BC score of 5; and AP English and Composition score of 4. GPA 4.13.
She is thinking of a double major in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Architecture, or as close as she can get to that combination. If her list of Natural Sciences can make the cut for the MAPS requirement, she will apply to the College of Engineering. If not - she’ll have to think hard what to do.
Anyone can give us a hint? @AlwaysMoving ?
I’m sorry to say I don’t know. I would call/email on Tuesday and ask admissions.
They are purposely leaving it vague so they can accept kids with different types of science unique to their school, but Computer Science is about as far as you can get from a traditional science class.
Let us know what you find out.
Not sure Computer Science is “far.” When you check the web site of the school system (high school), they list that subject in the “Science” section, not “math” Section. Basically, there are “Languages”, “Arts”, “Science”, “Math”, and “Social Science”. And that’s it. That’s why we were thinking that is gotta be ok.
My kid already pressed “submit” button. So we will just wait now. I’ll let you know whether she is accepted. This will be an indication whether it was ok or not.
The website says 3 natural sciences, and you have 3 (bio, chem, physics). I would guess Computer Science would not be considered a natural science, but why is that a problem with regard to the requirement you quoted?
“1 of physics AND 1 of chemistry or biology AND 1 of another science” Why can’t bio or chem be the “another science”?
Hmmm. May be you are right, @evergreen5. I thought that, once you used physics for “1 of physics”, and used, say, chemistry for “1 of chemistry or biology”, you cannot use, say, biology for “1 of another science,” because you sorta covered it in the second item. But you are probably right! Thank you!
I meant as far while still being a science.
fwiw, AP Comp Sci isn’t listed as a science at my kid’s Colorado HS, but it’s not listed as a math either.
@AlwaysMoving Well, by now, the application is submitted. Whatever had to be clicked - is clicked. I guess we all just wait. And schools - in different states and different counties - will keep listing courses inconsistently. Sigh.
