Requirements

I’m aware that getting into UNC from out of state is very tough, but what does the school look for from out-of-staters?

From what I’ve observed on other forums…OSS students who get in usually have crazy high test scores and/or a super unique extra curricular. But the only way to find out if you’ll make the cut is to apply! Best of luck!

UNC’s cap for OOS is 18% for the system as a whole- and that includes sports recruits. But- they are allocated across all of the campuses.

I’m guessing you mean Chapel Hill, but both Wilmington and Asheville are great campuses, and get fewer OOS applicants. UNC has been pouring money into both, to make them attractive enough to take the pressure off CH. That won’t make it exactly easy, but the odds are much higher. Both have specialty areas in which they particularly shine (Wilmington’s Marine Science division is top-drawer, for example).

As noname100 says, numbers will be critical.

My D will be attending UNC-CH this fall as an OOS freshman. She is the valedictorian with a full AP load ( took what the school allows - starts junior year) and advanced honors course load and has ACT and SAT scores into the 99th %. Her subject test scores are above 750 and she has 5’s on all AP tests. She has several leadership positions in and out of school and has raised over $30,000 for one of her leadership organizations. Her letters of rec are excellent. She won a student athlete award in a tri-county area. There are more things but I think you get the drift. She did not make the honors program despite getting all A+'s throughout high school and did not get merit money- but their financial aid was pretty good considering we would never get FA at the " lower" schools. Hope this helps- good luck.

I wanted to add that we have a family member ( same HS) who recently graduated from UNC- that may have helped (?). The GC told my D that he really had no idea if she would be accepted and he was looking forward to seeing how it would pan out.
