Requirements

What are some non-major requirements at American, and how can you get out of them?

I don't know the specifics for American (I'm getting lazy because it's the end of the school year) but a lot of colleges let you place out of some Gen-Ed courses if you get a 4 or a 5 on the AP test specific to the subject.

General Education Program:
<a href="http://www.gened.american.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.gened.american.edu/</a></p>

You can get credit for up to 30 hours in the 5 core areas. That's excluding the math and writing requirements which you can also exempt using AP/IB/SAT2 credit. Most I've talked to say taking college writing is pretty important regardless, so I don't really care about how I do on lit this year, lol.

Then you pick one of their five programs? That would be really nice, because you can pick classes that meet their requirements and help out with your major.

I don't know if you're saying what I think you're saying. The 5 core areas aren't different programs; you just have to take a certain number of courses (I think 2) from each area to meet your requirements. Within the core areas, there are different courses and routes you can take to satisfy the requirements of that core area though. Snoop around a bit more on their website and it should make sense.
