How common is it for chemistry graduate schools to rescind offers? I've been accepted to a top 40 school, and I want to do organic chem research. I'm going to fail PChem II (or late drop, which equals an F) and will probably make 2 A's and a couple B's/C's in my other chem classes.

I’m not sure about field specifics but I think it’s pretty uncommon for grad programs to rescind an offer of admissions solely based on one failed class. It’s not exactly like undergrad - they are usually more interested in other factors such as your research and work background. You’ll probably be fine.

Is a late drop really an F, reflected as a 0 in calculating your GPA? Sounds pretty unreasonable. At my school it’s just marked as a W for withdrawal and it is not counted toward GPA

Thanks guys. Yeah, I’m afraid a late drop is essentially an F. It might appear as a W, but it is calculated as an F in the GPA. This can be avoided, but only if the committee deems there are extraordinary circumstances present.

A late drop is an F at my university, too, and at my undergrad college. They do this to prevent people from dropping at the last minute after they have done no work and/or are afraid they will fail the final.

^ Hmm, yeah that sounds about right.
