I've tried searching a bit and I couldn't find anything specific to MIT about this topic... but I was wondering how many people get rescinded from MIT each year? And how good do your grades have to be to avoid that? Because Right now I have like 3 A's, 2 B's, and 2 C's :(. Going into finals... the C's will be very tough to raise. The A's are solid, and it's possible that the B's will drop.

In my defense, I am taking a pretty tough courseload (5 APs & college math), and I was out of town/sick for like 3/4 of April. Anyways, I'm really, really scared right now, what should I do? Should I contact MIT? Or just hope it blows by? When will they contact me if they decide to rescind?

You've got perfectly valid reasons to get less-than-optimal grades. I'd definitely not recommend waiting until they see your grades and decide to re-review your application to explain the situation..

Call them up ASAP and explain the situation. I'm sure they'll be quite understanding, after hearing the situation. That way they get an initial good impression of you, followed by your poor grades (which will seem less problematic, since they understand your situation) instead of an initial bad impression of you (because of the grades) and then you have to try to defend yourself.

Good luck, I'm sure everything will work out fine, though.

Thanks, I think I'll shoot over an email now and pray for the best. Though to be honest, I could've raised those C's if senioritis wasn't in full swing :/.

Phew, I thought I was the only one freaking out... My school's college counselor said you would have to have some "serious problems" in order to get it reconsidered. And after looking at UPenn's final transcript letter, they only want an explanation if you have D's or F's (according to a friend).

This topic comes up every year, probably because senioritis is endemic to American high schools. :p

I don't know what the criteria are for rescinding, and I think it's likely that students with very surprising grades will get a stern letter from MIT, but I have never personally heard of someone getting rescinded from MIT.
