This is a little embarrassing, but I feel the need to write in because I’m currently freaking out.
I’m really worried that my acceptance may be rescinded.
I’ve been offered admission into UW for the Winter 2022 quarter for oceanography. The thing is, I am probably going to finish the semester with a D in my Calc III class (and As and a B in my others). I’ve started working two jobs this semester and it’s left me with little time to focus on school and the stress of the two has taken a toll on my mental health. I’ve had a difficult time learning in an online environment and coupled with the lack of time I’ve had to put into this class, I’m most likely not going to pass. I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences or heard similar stories about UW revoking admission for a bad grade. This is my dream school and I’m devastated that I may not be able to attend. My community college also allows students to petition for late withdrawals, so I’m curious if a W on my transcript will look better than a D.
I’m not completely certain if this class is required for admission since a chemistry and biology course also qualify for the requirement Calc III fills. I’ve taken those chem and bio classes (and have done well in both) so I’m not sure if this changes things.
Anyways, that’s my situation and I’d appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks in advance!
I’ve heard that the rescinding policy varies from school to school. Perhaps it is best to talk with your counselor as soon as possible and send the UW admission office a kind email asking for exemption.
The general rule is no D or F grades. Yes, you could be rescinded for a D or F.
So you’re a transfer student from another college? I’d speak to an academic advisor immediately to find out what your options are. Petitioning for a withdrawal seems like a last ditch attempt as it isn’t a sure thing. A W is always better than a D or F.
Is it necessary for you to work two jobs? If not, quit one of them and do all you can to pass with a C. Get a tutor, or got to the student support center. Meet with the professor or TA.
The issue probably isn’t that Calc 3 is required, but more that they simply can’t ignore a D or F. Send an email or call their admissions office. Ask them if the grade might get you rescinded.
But so does dropping a course you reported as in progress on your application.
You need to inform them of any such event so that they are not surprised next summer with your final transcripts. If they do rescind (or re-review your application) now, at least you have time to apply elsewhere.
Hey, I just wanted to update in case anyone comes across this post in the future in a similar situation. I did not get rescinded! I ended up dropping my math class and getting an excused withdrawal. I talked to my academic advisor within my department and they did not seem concerned. It turns out I didn’t even need that math class I dropped to transfer. Admissions have not received my final transcripts yet, but after talking with them, they said the worst-case scenario is that they’d ask me to explain. I’m not very worried though. I just want to say thanks to everyone who responded :))
Thanks for the update. If you don’t need to work 2 jobs then it would be wise to reduce your hours. If you do have to work, organize your schedule so you can focus on your studies. I’ve been there so I know how difficult it can be, but you can do it. Good luck at UW.
